Pityriasis rosea

Pityriasis rosea is a common skin rash. It's mild and usually goes away on its own without treatment.

Pityriasis versicolor

Pityriasis versicolor is a common fungal skin infection. It's sometimes also called tinea versicolor. A GP can prescribe treatment for it, but it can keep coming back.

Plagiocephaly and brachycephaly (flat head syndrome)

Babies sometimes develop a flattened head when they're a few months old, usually as a result of them spending a lot of time lying on their back.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes pain on the bottom of your foot, around your heel and arch. You can usually ease the pain yourself but see a GP if it does not improve within 2 weeks.

Pleurisy

Pleurisy is inflammation around the lungs, which causes sharp chest pain. It's easy to treat and usually gets better in a few days, but can sometimes be a sign of something more serious, like pneumonia.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection. Most people get better in 2 to 4 weeks, but babies, older people, and people with heart or lung conditions are at risk of getting seriously ill and may need treatment in hospital.

Poisoning

Poisoning can happen if you swallow, touch, or breathe in substances that can be harmful, such as chemicals or medicines. Get medical advice immediately if you think you or someone else has been poisoned.

Polio

Polio is a serious infection that's now very rare because of the vaccination programme. It's only found in a few countries and the chance of getting it in the UK is extremely low.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that can affect periods, ovulation, and fertility. Common features include irregular periods, excess hair growth or acne, and signs of insulin resistance.

Polyhydramnios

Polyhydramnios is when there's too much amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb) during pregnancy. It's not usually serious and there's often no cause.
