1. Qué es Pepcid y para qué se utiliza

La famotidina pertenece a un grupo de medicamentos que actúa sobre las células productoras de ácido localizadas en el estómago, disminuyendo la producción del mismo.

Pepcid está indicado para el alivio y tratamiento sintomático de la acidez y ardor de estómago en adultos y niños mayores de 16 años.

Debe consultar a un médico si empeora o si no mejora después de 7 días de tratamiento.

2. Qué necesita saber antes de empezar a tomar Pepcid

No tome Pepcid

-si es alérgico a la famotidina o a cualquiera de los demás componentes de este medicamento (incluidos en la sección 6).

  • si es alérgico a otros medicamentos antagonistas H2 (antihistamínicos) ya que se han observado casos de hipersensibilidad cruzada.

Advertencias y precauciones

Consulte a su médico o farmacéutico antes de empezar a tomar Pepcid:

  • Si presenta una pérdida de peso no atribuible a causas conocidas.
  • Si es de mediana edad o mayor y tiene molestias de estómago por primera vez o los síntomas han cambiado recientemente.
  • Si presenta problemas hepáticos o renales.
  • Si presenta dificultad al tragar o si el malestar estomacal persiste.
  • Si tiene antecedentes de alergia a otros medicamentos de este grupo (cimetidina, nizatidina, ranitidina).

Suspenda el tratamiento y consulte a su médico en caso de que experimente dificultad o dolor al tragar, vómitos severos, heces ennegrecidas, ahogo o dolor en el pecho.

El tratamiento no debe exceder de 7 días, si al cabo de este tiempo no mejora o empeora, consulte a su médico.

Para evitar las molestias de estómago relacionadas con la hiperacidez (digestiones pesadas, ardor y acidez), se debe procurar no fumar, realizar comidas de forma regular, no ingerir alcohol y evitar situaciones de estrés.

Si le van a realizar alguna prueba de diagnóstico (incluidos análisis de sangre, pruebas cutáneas que utilizan alérgenos, etc.) comunique a su médico que está tomando este medicamento, ya que puede alterar los resultados de la prueba.

Niños y adolescentes

Los menores de 16 años no deben tomar este medicamento.

Toma de Pepcid con otros medicamentos

Comunique a su médico o farmacéutico si está utilizando, ha utilizado recientemente o podría tener que utilizar cualquier otro medicamento:

  • Carbonato cálcico, cuando se utiliza para tratar niveles de fosforo en sangre elevados (hiperfosfatemia) en pacientes en diálisis.
  • No tomar antiácidos de neutralización (bicarbonatos, carbonatos, hidróxidos, sales de aluminio, magnesio, calcio, etc…) hasta 2 horas después de la toma de este medicamento.
  • Si está tomando preparados que contienen ketoconazol o itraconazol (antifúngicos) por vía oral, debe evitar tomar antes medicamentos que reduzcan la acidez gástrica (por ejemplo: famotidina 10 mg) y deberá tomar famotidina siempre 2 horas después del antifúngico.
  • Este medicamento puede reducir los efectos de preparados que contienen sales de hierro.
  • Pepcid puede disminuir el efecto de la suspensión oral de posaconazol (medicamento para beber utilizado para prevenir y tratar algunas infecciones por hongos).
  • Pepcid puede disminuir el efecto de dasatinib, erlotinib, gefitinib o pazopanib (medicamentos utilizados para tratar el cáncer).

Embarazo y lactancia

Si está embarazada o en periodo de lactancia, cree que pudiera estar embarazada o tiene intención de quedarse embarazada, consulte a su médico o farmacéutico antes de utilizar este medicamento.

Las mujeres en período de lactancia deben suspender el tratamiento con famotidina o interrumpir la lactancia.

Conducción y uso de máquinas

Aunque no son de esperar efectos en este sentido, si se producen mareos, no se debe conducir ni utilizar maquinaria peligrosa.

3. Cómo tomar Pepcid

Siga exactamente las instrucciones de administración del medicamento contenidas en este prospecto o las indicadas por su médico o farmacéutico. En caso de duda, pregunte a su médico o farmacéutico.

Adultos y adolescentes mayores de 16 años:

La dosis recomendada es de 1 comprimido cuando aparezcan los síntomas, ó 1 comprimido 1 hora antes de comer para evitar los síntomas asociados al alimento y bebida.

No tomar más de 2 comprimidos diarios.

La duración del tratamiento no debe exceder de 1 semana.

Este medicamento se toma por vía oral.

Tragar los comprimidos enteros con la ayuda de un vaso de líquido.

Uso en niños y adolescentes

Los menores de 16 años no deben tomar este medicamento.

Uso en pacientes de edad avanzada

Los pacientes de edad avanzada que sufran molestias de estómago por primera vez o pérdida de peso no atribuible a causas conocidas, deben consultar con su médico antes de tomar este medicamento.

Uso en pacientes con insuficiencia renal

Debe consultar a un médico antes de utilizar este medicamento. Puede ser necesario un ajuste de dosis.

Si toma más Pepcid del que debiera

En caso de sobredosis o ingestión accidental, consulte inmediatamente a su médico o farmacéutico, o llame al Servicio de Información de Toxicología, teléfono 91 562.04.20 (indicando el medicamento y la cantidad ingerida).

Si olvidó tomar Pepcid

No tome una dosis doble para compensar las dosis olvidadas.

4. Posibles efectos adversos

Al igual que todos los medicamentos, este medicamento puede producir efectos adversos, aunque no todas las personas los sufran.

Los efectos adversos más frecuentes son dolor de cabeza y mareos.

Otros efectos adversos son:

Poco frecuentes (pueden afectar hasta 1 de cada 100 personas):

  • exceso de gases intestinales

Raros (pueden afectar hasta 1 de cada 1.000 personas):

  • estreñimiento y diarrea

Muy raros (pueden afectar hasta 1 de cada 10.000 personas):

  • hipersensibilidad, anafilaxia, angioedema
  • trastornos psíquicos reversibles como depresión, ansiedad, agitación, confusión y alucinaciones
  • mareo, astenia, fatiga y somnolencia
  • náuseas y/o vómitos, molestias abdominales, dolor o distensión, pérdida de apetito, sequedad de boca
  • ictericia colestática, alteraciones de enzimas hepáticas
  • necrolisis epidérmica tóxica, erupción cutánea, prurito, urticaria
  • dolor de articulaciones (artralgia), calambres musculares
  • malestar

5. Conservación de Pepcid

Conservar por debajo de 30º C. Mantener el envase perfectamente cerrado para protegerlo de la humedad.

Mantener este medicamento fuera de la vista y del alcance de los niños.

No utilice este medicamento después de la fecha de caducidad que aparece en el envase después de “CAD”. La fecha de caducidad es el último día del mes que se indica.

Los medicamentos no se deben tirar por los desagües ni a la basura. Deposite los envases y los medicamentos que no necesita en el Punto Sigre de la farmacia. En caso de duda pregunte a su farmacéutico cómo deshacerse de los envases y de los medicamentos que no necesita. De esta forma ayudará a proteger el medio ambiente.

Composición de Pepcid

-El principio activo es Famotidina 10 mg por comprimido recubierto.

-Los demás componentes son: hidroxipropil celulosa, estearato de magnesio, hipromelosa, celulosa microcristalina, almidón de maíz pregelatinizado, óxido de hierro rojo (E172), talco, dióxido de titanio (E171) y cera carnauba.
