Advice on proper use
Antibiotics are used for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria. They have no effect on infections caused by viruses.
Sometimes an infection caused by a bacterium does not respond to treatment with an antibiotic. One of the most common reasons for this is that the bacteria that cause the infection are resistant to the antibiotic being taken. This means that they can survive and even multiply, despite the antibiotic.
Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics for many reasons. Using antibiotics with caution can help reduce the opportunities for bacteria to become resistant to them.
When your doctor prescribes a treatment with an antibiotic, it is to treat only your current illness. Paying attention to the following advice will help prevent the emergence of resistant bacteria that could stop the antibiotic from working.
1. It is very important that you receive the correct dose of the antibiotic the right number of times, and for the correct number of days. Read the label instructions and if you do not understand something, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
2. You should not take an antibiotic unless it has been prescribed especially for you and you should use it only for the infection for which it has been prescribed.
3. You should not take antibiotics that have been prescribed for other people, even if they have had a similar infection to yours.
4. You should not give antibiotics that have been prescribed for you to other people.
5. If you have any antibiotic left over after receiving treatment as instructed by your doctor, you should take it to the pharmacy to have it disposed of properly.
