1. Qué es Plantaben y para qué se utiliza

Plantaben pertenece al grupo de medicamentos denominados: laxantes formadores de volumen. El principio activo son las cutículas de las semillas de una planta llamada Plantago Ovata. Estas cutículas tienen una gran capacidad de retener líquido aumentando el volumen de la masa fecal y dándole una consistencia adecuada para regular el tránsito intestinal.

Plantaben se utiliza:

  • Para el tratamiento sintomático del estreñimiento.
  • En situaciones en las que sería deseable facilitar la deposición de las heces, por ejemplo en casos de deposiciones dolorosas tras cirugía rectal o anal, fisuras anales y hemorroides.

Debe consultar a un médico si empeora o si no mejora después de 3 días.

2. Qué necesita saber antes de empezar a tomar Plantaben

  • Si es alérgico a las semillas de Plantago ovata o a cualquiera de los demás componentes de este medicamento, incluidos en la sección 6 (ver sección “Advertencias y precauciones”).
  • Si padece obstrucción intestinal, estenosis (estrechamiento) del tracto digestivo, impactación fecal (acumulación de heces endurecidas), atonía (falta de tono y debilidad) del colon o íleo (parálisis del colon).
  • Si presenta dolor abdominal, náuseas o vómitos.
  • Si presenta dificultades al tragar.
  • Si tiene diabetes mellitus difícil de regular.
  • Si presenta sangrado rectal no diagnosticado.
  • Si presenta imposibilidad de defecar después de utilizar un laxante.
  • Si padece enfermedades del esófago y el cardias (unión del esófago al estómago).

Advertencias y precauciones

Consulte a su médico o farmacéutico o enfermero antes de empezar a tomar Plantaben.

Si usted es un profesional sanitario o cuidador que ha manipulado durante un tiempo prolongado productos con polvo de semillas de Plantago ovata, puede haberse hecho alérgico a estos productos debido a su inhalación continuada. En caso de confirmarse que los síntomas (enumerados en la sección 4) son debidos a reacción alérgica, no utilice este producto (ver sección “No tome Plantaben”).

Durante el tratamiento se deberán beber de 1 ó 2 litros de agua al día. La ingestión de este producto sin la adecuada cantidad de líquido puede originar un bloqueo en la garganta o esófago.

No se debe tomar este preparado y tumbarse inmediatamente después.

Si se producen dolores abdominales, náuseas o vómitos, se interrumpirá el tratamiento y se consultará a un médico.

Niños y adolescentes

No se recomienda su utilización en niños menores de 6 años.

Otros medicamentos y Plantaben

Comunique a su médico o farmacéutico que está utilizando, ha utilizado recientemente o podría tener que utilizar cualquier otro medicamento.

  • Si está tomando otros medicamentos, como minerales (calcio, hierro, litio, zinc), vitaminas (vitamina B12), medicamentos para impedir la coagulación de la sangre (de los denominados derivados cumarínicos) ó fármacos para el tratamiento de enfermedades del corazón del tipo de los denominados digitálicos, debe tomar Plantaben 1 hora antes o después de la ingestión de su medicamento, ya que la fibra podría dificultar su absorción.
  • No debe tomar Plantaben si está tomando fármacos para la diarrea o fármacos que impidan la motilidad del intestino (como difenoxilato, loperamida, opiáceos), porque puede aparecer una obstrucción intestinal.
  • En pacientes diabéticos tratados con insulina, puede ser necesario reducir la dosis de insulina, cuando este medicamento se toma junto con las comidas.
  • El uso concomitante con hormonas tiroideas requiere supervisión médica ya que puede ser necesario un ajuste de la dosis de estas hormonas.

Embarazo y lactancia y fertilidad

Si está embarazada o en periodo de lactancia, cree que podría estar embarazada o tiene intención de quedarse embarazada, consulte a su médico o farmacéutico antes de utilizar este medicamento.

La fibra soluble absorbe sustancias orgánicas, inorgánicas y minerales, por lo que para evitar el riesgo de eliminación excesiva de dichas sustancias durante el embarazo, se aconseja no sobrepasar las dosis recomendadas en este prospecto o prescritas por su médico.

Conducción y uso de máquinas

No se han descrito efectos que influyan sobre la capacidad para conducir o utilizar maquinaria peligrosa.

Plantaben contiene sacarina sódica, bicarbonato sódico y colorante amarillo anaranjado S (E-110)

Este medicamento contiene 178,36 mg de sodio (componente principal de la sal de mesa/para cocinar) en cada sobre. Esto equivale al 26,7 % de la ingesta diaria máxima de sodio recomendada para un adulto.

Consulte a su médico o farmaceútico si necesita Plantaben de manera diaria o por un periodo prolongado de tiempo, especialmente si le han recomendado una dieta baja en sal (sodio).

Este medicamento puede producir reacciones alérgicas porque contiene colorante amarillo anaranjado S (E-110). Puede provocar asma, especialmente en pacientes alérgicos al ácido acetilsalicílico.

3. Cómo tomar Plantaben

Siga exactamente las instrucciones de administración del medicamento contenidas en este prospecto o las indicadas por su médico o farmacéutico o enfermero. En caso de duda, pregunte a su médico o farmacéutico o enfermero.

Plantaben se administra por vía oral.

La dosis recomendada es:

Uso en adultos, pacientes de edad avanzada y niños mayores de 12 años:

De 2 a 3 sobres al día (lo que equivale a 7 – 11 g de Ispaghula husk al día), según necesidad y respuesta.

Uso en niños de 6 a 12 años de edad:

De 1 a 2 sobres al día (lo que equivale a 3 – 8 g de Ispaghula husk al día), según necesidad y respuesta.

Para la correcta administración se recomienda vaciar el contenido del sobre en un vaso de agua fría o cualquier otro líquido (200 cc), agitar la mezcla hasta que sea uniforme, y beber inmediatamente. Se recomienda ingerir a continuación otro vaso de líquido. Además se recomienda beber de 1 a 2 litros de agua al día durante el tratamiento.

Debe de tomarse en posición erguida.

No debe tomar el preparado y tumbarse inmediatamente después

Durante la preparación del producto para su administración procure evitar la inhalación del polvo.

Recuerde tomar su medicamento.

Uso en niños y adolescentes

No se recomienda su utilización en niños menores de 6 años.

Si toma másPlantabendel que debe

En caso de sobredosis o ingestión accidental, consulte inmediatamente a su médico o farmacéutico o llame al Servicio de Información Toxicológica, teléfono 91 562 04 20 indicando el medicamento y la cantidad ingerida.

No se han descrito fenómenos de intoxicación por sobredosificación, ya que los componentes activos de este preparado no se absorben.

Sin embargo, en caso de ingestión masiva se procederá a tratamiento sintomático. La sobredosis con Ispaghula puede originar malestar abdominal y flatulencia e incluso obstrucción intestinal. Se debe mantener una ingesta adecuada de líquido.

No tome una dosis doble para compensar las dosis olvidadas.

4. Posibles efectos adversos

Al igual que todos los medicamentos Plantaben puede producir efectos adversos, aunque no todas las personas los sufran.

Las semillas de Plantago ovata contienen sustancias que pueden provocar reacciones alérgicas tras la toma del medicamento por vía oral, tras el contacto con la piel o, en el caso de las formulaciones en polvo, por inhalación.

Los síntomas alérgicos pueden incluir congestión de nariz, enrojecimiento de ojos, dificultad para respirar, reacciones en la piel, picor, y en algunos casos anafilaxia (reacción alérgica súbita y generalizada que puede provocar shock amenazante de la vida). Las personas que manipulen asiduamente las formulaciones en polvo del producto, son más propensas a sufrir estas reacciones (Ver sección 2).

Al inicio del tratamiento y, dependiendo de la dosis, pueden aparecer algunas molestias como flatulencia (gases) y sensación de plenitud, que desaparecen en pocos días sin necesidad de abandonar la medicación.

En algunos casos puede aparecer distensión abdominal.

Si se ingiere sin la suficiente cantidad de líquidos puede producirse riesgo de obstrucción intestinal o esofágica o impactación fecal (acumulación de heces endurecidas).

5. Conservación de Plantaben

Mantener este medicamento fuera de la vista y del alcance de los niños.

No utilice este medicamento después de la fecha de caducidad que aparece en el envase después de CAD o EXP. La fecha de caducidad es el último día del mes que se indica.

Losmedicamentos no se deben tirar por los desagües ni a la basura. Deposite losenvases y losmedicamentos que no necesita en el Punto SIGREde la farmacia. En caso de duda pregunte a su farmacéutico cómo deshacerse de losenvases y de losmedicamentos que no necesita. De esta forma, ayudará a proteger el medioambiente.
