1. What is Kreon and what is it used for
Kreon belongs to a group of medicines known as pancreatic enzymes.
Thanks to its activity on fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, pancreatic enzymes facilitate digestion and promote the absorption of food by people whose bodies are not able to produce these enzymes in sufficient quantities.
The pancreatin (lipase, amylase, protease) contained in this preparation is extracted from pig pancreas.
Kreon is used for the treatment of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency.
2. What you need to know before you take Kreon
Do not take Kreon:
- if you are allergic to pancreatin (lipase, amylase, protease) or any of the other components of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions:
Consult your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before taking Kreon.
Be particularly careful with Kreon:
- if you experience symptoms of an allergy.

3. How to take Kreon

The initial dose is established according to weight and age. The initial dose should be 1,000 units of lipase/kg/meal in children under 4 years and 500 units of lipase/kg/meal in children over 4 years.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal bloating, diarrhea.
These may be due to the disease for which you are taking Kreon. During the studies, the number of patients taking Kreon who had stomach pain or diarrhea was similar to or lower than those not taking Kreon.
Uncommon (affects 1 in 100 people): skin rash.
Frequency not known (cannot be estimated from the available data): pruritus (itching) and urticaria.
Kreon may cause other severe allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), including respiratory problems or lip swelling.

5. Storage of Kreon
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not store above 25°C.
Once opened, do not store above 25°C and use within 6 months. Keep the container tightly closed.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after CAD or EXP. The expiry date is the last day of the month stated.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help protect the environment.

Composition of Kreon
- The active substance is pancreatin (lipase, amylase, protease). Each capsule contains 150 mg of pancreatin, equivalent to 10,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase, 8,000 Ph. Eur. units of amylase, and 600 Ph. Eur. units of protease.
- The other ingredients are macrogol 4000, hypromellose phthalate, cetyl alcohol, triethyl citrate, and dimeticone. The capsule ingredients are: gelatin, iron oxide red, yellow, and black (E-172), and sodium lauryl sulfate.
