7.Instructions for use

1. What is Maviret and what is it used for

Maviret is an antiviral medication used to treat children 3 years of age and older with chronic hepatitis C. It is an infectious disease that affects the liver, caused by the hepatitis C virus. Maviret contains active ingredients glecaprevir and pibrentasvir.

Maviret acts by preventing the hepatitis C virus from multiplying and infecting new cells. In this way, the infection is eliminated from the body.

2. What you need to know before your child starts taking Maviret

Do not give Maviret if:

  • your child is allergic to glecaprevir, pibrentasvir, or any of the other components of this medication (listed in section6).
  • your child has severe liver problems other than hepatitisC.
  • your child is taking the following medications:
    • atazanavir (for HIV infection)
    • atorvastatina or simvastatina (to reduce blood cholesterol)
    • carbamazepina, fenobarbital, fenitoína, primidona (usually used for epilepsy)
    • dabigatrán etexilato (to prevent blood clots)
    • medicines that contain etinilestradiol (such as birth control pills, including vaginal rings, transdermal patches, and tablets)
    • rifampicina (for infections)
    • St. John's Wort (hypericum perforatum),(a plant-based medicine used for mild depression).

Do not give Maviret to your child if they are in any of the above situations. If in doubt, consult your child's doctor or pharmacist before administering Maviret.

Warnings and precautions

Consult your child's doctor if they are in any of the following cases, as the doctor may want to monitor your child more closely:

Blood tests

Your child's doctor will perform blood tests before, during, and after treatment with Maviret. This way, the doctor can determine the following:

  • if your child should take Maviret and for how long
  • if the treatment has worked and your child no longer has the hepatitis C virus.

7. Instructions for use

Read the entire section 7 before using the granules in blister packs of Maviret.

Step 1. Take the number of blister packs that your child's doctor has recommended

Child's weight (kg)

Number of blister packs once a day

Amount of food (approximate)

From 12 to less than 20 kg

3 blister packs

Approximately 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml) of one of the recommended foods listed in step 2

From 20 to less than 30 kg

4 blister packs

From 30 to less than 45 kg

5 blister packs

For children weighing 45 kg or more, consult your child's doctor about the possibility of administering Maviret in tablets.

Do not administer more than 5 blister packs.

Step 2. Choose a suitable food to mix with the Maviret granules

If the food is suitable, it should be able to be picked up with the spoon without falling. It should be soft, have low water content, and be able to be swallowed without chewing.

Examples of recommended foods:

  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Soft cheese
  • Peanut butter cream
  • Chocolate spread for spreading
  • Thick jam
  • Other foods that can be picked up with a spoon without falling

Note: In addition to the food used to mix with the granules, Maviret should be taken at the same time or just after a main meal or snack. The food used to mix with the granules does not replace the main meal or snack that should be taken with Maviret.

Do not use foodsthat drip from the spoon because the medicine may dissolve quickly, have a bitter taste, and be less effective.Do not use foodsto which your child is allergic.

Examples of foods thatshould not be used:

?Liquids or watery foods

?Apple sauce

?Foods or liquids that have been heated or are frozen

?Bread or other foods that require chewing

?Non-Greek yogurt

?Infant food

?Foods that drip from the spoon

To request more information about suitable foods, consult your child's doctor or pharmacist.

Step 3. Prepare the necessary materials

On a clean surface, place the following:

  • Carton with blister packs
  • Suitable food
  • Food bowl
  • Spoon
  • Scissors

Step 4. Measure the amount of food

  • Place a small amount (1-2 teaspoons or 5-10 ml) of the soft food in the food bowl.
  • The granules inside the blister packs are very small, so placing the food in the bowl first will help to mix them well.

Step 5. Prepare the blister pack

  • Find the line of dots on the blister pack to locate the top.
  • Hold the blister pack vertically and tap the top. Continue tapping until all the granules have fallen to the bottom.
  • Check the top of the blister pack carefully to ensure that all the granules are at the bottom.

Step 6. Cut the top of the blister pack

  • Hold the blister pack by the center, pressing above where the granules are inside.
  • Use scissors to cut completely across the top of the blister pack.

Be careful: The granules are very small and can fall out easily.

Step 7. Empty the blister pack

  • Make sure the blister pack is completely open.
  • Carefully pour the granules (pink and yellow) into the food bowl.
  • Tap the blister pack to ensure all the granules fall out.
  • Repeat the same step for each blister pack needed for your child's daily dose.

Step 8. Check the blister pack

Look inside each blister pack to ensure that no granules are left behind.

Do not leave granules in the blister pack because the effectiveness of the medicine may be reduced if the full dose is not taken.

Step 9. Mix

  • Use the spoon to gently mix and incorporate the granules into the food.
  • Do not crush the granules. If the granules are crushed, they will have a bitter taste.
  • Do not conserve the mixture. Administer it to your child immediately.

If it is not administered within 5 minutes, the mixture may have a bitter taste.

If it is not administered within 15 minutes, the medicine may be less effective. Dispose of it and start again.

Step 10. Administer the medicine

  • Take a small amount of the mixture with the spoon.
  • Ensure that your child swallows the mixture without chewing.
  • Repeat until your child has taken the entire mixture.
  • If there are any granules left, add more food and mix. Then, complete the dose.
  • Ensure that your child takes the full dose of the medicine.

?If yourchild does not take a dose, see section 3 “How to take Marivet” for more information.

Step 11. Confirm the dose for the next day

Check that there are enough blister packs for the next day's dose of Maviret for your child.

To replenish the blister packs or renew the prescription, contact your child's doctor or pharmacist.
