1. What is Esomeprazol Teva and what is it used for

Esomeprazol Teva contains a medicine called esomeprazole that belongs to a group of medicines called “proton pump inhibitors”. They work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

Esomeprazol Teva is used to treat the following diseases:

Adults

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Where stomach acid rises up into the esophagus (the tube that connects the throat with the stomach) causing pain, inflammation, and heartburn.
  • Ulcers in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine that are infected with the bacteria called “Helicobacter pylori”. If you have this disease, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and allow the ulcer to heal.
  • Stomach ulcers caused by medicines called NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Esomeprazol Teva may also be used to prevent the formation of stomach ulcers if you are taking NSAIDs.
  • Excess stomach acid caused by a tumor in the pancreas (Zollinger Ellison syndrome).
  • Continuation treatment for the prevention of bleeding from peptic ulcers induced by intravenous administration.

Adolescents 12 years of age and older

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Where stomach acid rises up into the esophagus (the tube that connects the throat with the stomach) causing pain, inflammation, and heartburn.
  • Ulcers in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum) that are infected by a bacteria called “Helicobacter pylori”. If you have this disease, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and allow the ulcer to heal.

2. What you need to know before starting to take Esomeprazol Teva

Do not take Esomeprazol Teva

  • if you are allergic to esomeprazole, or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
  • if you are allergic to any other proton pump inhibitor (e.g. pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, omeprazole),
  • if you are taking medicines that contain nelfinavir (used to treat HIV).

Do not take Esomeprazol Teva if any of the above applies to you. If you are unsure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Esomeprazol Teva.

Warnings and precautions

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Esomeprazol Teva if:

  • You have severe liver problems.
  • You have severe kidney problems.
  • You have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a similar medicine to Esomeprazol Teva to reduce stomach acid.
  • You are due to have a specific blood test (Cromogranin A).

Esomeprazol Teva may mask the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happens before you start taking Esomeprazol Teva or while you are taking it, contact your doctor immediately:

  • You lose a lot of weight without any reason and have trouble swallowing,
  • You feel stomach pain or indigestion,
  • You start vomiting food or blood,
  • Your stools are black (stools with blood).

If you have been prescribed Esomeprazol Teva and notice any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor if the symptoms of your disease persist or change.

The use of proton pump inhibitors like Esomeprazol Teva, especially for a period of more than one year, may slightly increase the risk of fractures of the hip, wrist or spine. Consult your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (which may increase the risk of osteoporosis).

Rashes and skin symptoms

If you develop a rash, especially in areas of the skin exposed to the sun, consult your doctor as soon as possible, as it may be necessary to stop treatment with Esomeprazol Teva. Remember to mention any other symptoms you may notice, such as joint pain.

Children under 12 years

Esomeprazol Teva should not be used in children under 12 years, as there is no available data.

Severe skin reactions have been reported in patients taking esomeprazole (see also section 4). The rash may include mouth ulcers, throat, nose, genital, and conjunctivitis (red and swollen eyes). These severe skin reactions usually occur after symptoms similar to the flu, such as fever, headache, and body aches. The rash may cover large areas of the body with blisters and skin peeling.

If at any time during treatment (even after several weeks) you develop a rash or any of these skin symptoms, stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately.

Other medicines and Esomeprazol Teva

  • If you have trouble swallowing the capsules:
    • Open the capsules and pour the pellets into half a glass of water (without gas). Do not use other liquids.
    • Drink the mixture directly or within 30 minutes. Always rinse the glass well with half a glass of water and drink it. This medication contains whole pieces - do not chew or crush them.
  • If you cannot swallow anything, the pellets can be mixed with a little water and put into a syringe. This can be administered directly into your stomach ("gastric tube").

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)

  • Blood problems such as a reduced number of white blood cells or platelets. This causes weakness, bruises, or more frequent infections,
  • Low sodium levels in the blood. This may cause weakness, discomfort (vomiting), and cramps,
  • Sensation of agitation, confusion, or depression,
  • Changes in taste,
  • Eye problems such as blurred vision,
  • Sudden sensation of difficulty breathing or lack of breath (bronchospasm),
  • Inflammation of the inside of the mouth,
  • An infection called “candidiasis” that may affect the intestine and is caused by a fungus,

  • Muscle weakness,
  • Severe kidney problems,
  • Increased breast size in men.

Frequency unknown (cannot be estimated from available data)

  • Inflammation of the intestine (which may trigger diarrhea)
  • Skin rash, possibly with joint pain

Esomeprazol Teva may, in very rare cases, affect white blood cells, leading to immunodeficiency. If you have an infection with symptoms such as fever with a general condition that is very reduced or fever with symptoms of a local infection such as neck pain, throat pain, or mouth pain or difficulty urinating, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible so that the lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis) can be ruled out by a blood test. It is essential to provide information about your medication.

The following information is intended exclusively for healthcare professionals:

Administration through the gastric tube

1.Open the capsule and empty the granules into an appropriate syringe and fill the syringe with approximately 25 ml of water and approximately 5 ml of air. For some tubes, dispersion in 50 ml of water is needed to avoid the granules blocking the tube.

2.Immediately agitate the syringe to distribute the granules uniformly in the suspension.

3.Hold the syringe with the tip upwards and check that the tip has not become blocked.

4.Insert the syringe into the tube while maintaining the previous position.

5.Agitate the syringe and place it with the tip downwards. Immediately inject 5 - 10 ml into the tube. Invert the syringe after injection and agitate (the syringe must be held with the tip upwards to avoid the tip becoming blocked)

6.Turn the syringe with the tip downwards and inject immediately another 5 - 10 ml into the tube. Repeat this procedure until the syringe is empty.

7.Fill the syringe with 25 ml of water and 5 ml of air passage and repeat step 5 if necessary to wash any sediment that may remain in the syringe. For some tubes, 50 ml of water is needed.
