1. What is Oxis Turbuhaler and what is it used for

Oxis Turbuhaler is an inhaler and contains the medication called formoterol, which belongs to a group of medications called long-acting beta-agonists or bronchodilators.

Formoterol acts by relaxing the muscles of the respiratory tract, making it easier to breathe. The effect begins within 1 to 3 minutes and lasts up to 12 hours after.

Your doctor has prescribed this medication to treat asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Asthma:

Oxis Turbuhaler is used to treat asthma in adults, adolescents, and children over 6 years of age.

For asthma, your doctor will prescribe two inhalers: Oxis Turbuhaler and a separate corticosteroid inhaler. Both must be used together.

  • Oxis Turbuhaler is used to help prevent the onset of asthma symptoms.
  • Some patients also use Oxis Turbuhaler when additional doses are needed to relieve asthma symptoms and facilitate breathing recovery.
  • Oxis Turbuhaler can also be used before physical exercise to prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD):

Oxis Turbuhaler can also be used to treat COPD symptoms in adults. COPD is a chronic disease of the pulmonary respiratory tract, which often occurs due to tobacco consumption.

2. What you need to know before starting to use Oxis Turbuhaler

Do not use Oxis Turbuhaler:

  • if you are allergic to the active ingredient or to any of the other components of this medication (listed in section 6).

- You are diabetic; you may need additional blood glucose tests while using this medication.

- You have high blood pressure or have had any heart problems.

- You have thyroid problems.

- You have low levels of potassium in your blood; your doctor may ask for blood tests to check potassium levels.

- You have severe liver problems, such as cirrhosis.

If you are unsure if any of these situations affect you, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using Oxis Turbuhaler.

Using Oxis Turbuhaler with other medications

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have used recently, or may need to use any other medication. This includes over-the-counter medications and herbal remedies, as Oxis Turbuhaler may affect the way some medications work, and some medications may affect Oxis Turbuhaler.

  • Beta-blockers (such as atenolol or propranolol for high blood pressure), including eye drops (such as timolol for glaucoma).
  • Medications for rapid or irregular heart rhythm (such as quinidine).
  • Medications like digoxin, used to treat heart failure.
  • Diuretics (such as furosemide), used to treat high blood pressure.

If any of these situations affect you, or you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using Oxis Turbuhaler.

The addition of anticholinergics (such as tiotropium bromide or ipratropium bromide) to Oxis Turbuhaler treatment may help you open your airways further.

Also inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are to undergo general anesthesia for surgery or dental treatment.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using this medication; do not use it unless your doctor tells you to.

How to prepare your new Oxis Turbuhaler inhaler

Before using your new Oxis Turbuhaler inhaler for the first time, you must prepare the inhaler for use as indicated below:

  • Unscrew and lift the cap. You may hear a rattling sound.
  • Hold the inhaler in a vertical position with the turquoise ring at the bottom.
  • Turn the turquoise ring to the top in one direction, then back to the top in the other direction (it doesn't matter which direction you turn it first).
  • You should hear a click.
  • Repeat this procedure again, turning the turquoise ring in both directions.
  • Your Oxis Turbuhaler inhaler is now ready for use.

How to take an inhalation

Each time you need to take an inhalation, follow the instructions below:

1.-Unscrew and lift the white cap. You may hear a rattling sound.

2.-Holdthe inhaler in a vertical positionwith the turquoise ring at the bottom.

3.-Do not hold the mouthpiece while loading the Turbuhaler. To load the Turbuhaler with a dose, turn the turquoise ring to the top in one direction and then back to the top in the other direction (it doesn't matter which direction you turn it first). You should hear a characteristic "click" sound. At this point, the Turbuhaler is loaded and ready for use.Load the Turbuhaler only when you need to use it.

4.-Hold the inhaler without bringing it to your mouth. Exhale gently (as much as you can but without it being uncomfortable). Do not exhalethrough the Turbuhaler.

5.-Placethe mouthpiecegentlybetween your teeth, close yourlips andinhale through your mouth asenergetically and deeply as you can. Do not bite or pressthe mouthpiece with your teeth.

6.-Remove the inhaler from your mouth and then exhale gently. The amount of medication released is very small, which means you may not notice its taste after inhalation. However, if you have followed the use instructions, you can be sure that you have inhaled the dose, and that the medication has reached your lungs.

7.-If you need to take a second inhalation, repeat steps 2 to 6.

8.-Replace the cap firmly after use.

Do not try to separate the mouthpiece as it is fixed to the Turbuhaler and should not be separated. The mouthpiece can rotate, but do not rotate it unnecessarily. Do not use the Turbuhaler if it is damaged or if the mouthpiece has come loose from the Turbuhaler.

As with other inhalers, caregivers should ensure that children prescribed Oxis Turbuhaler perform the inhalation technique correctly, as described above.

Cleaning the Turbuhaler

Clean the outside of the mouthpiece once a week with a dry cloth; do not use water or liquids.

When to start a new Turbuhaler

  • The dose indicator shows how many doses are left in the Turbuhaler, starting at 60 doses when it is full.
  • The dose indicator is marked in intervals of 10 doses, so not all doses are shown. When you see a red mark on the end of the indicator window for the first time, there are approximately 20 doses left. During the last 10 doses, the bottom of the dose indicator is red. When the "0" at the bottom of the red indicator window reaches the center of this, you should start a new Turbuhaler.

Note:

  • The ring can continue to turn and make a "click" sound even when the Turbuhaler is empty.
  • The sound you hear when shaking the inhaler is produced by a drying agent and not by the medication. Therefore, the sound does not indicate the amount of medication left in the Turbuhaler.
  • If you load your Oxis Turbuhaler inhaler more than once by mistake before taking your dose, you will only inhale one dose. However, the dose indicator will record all the doses loaded.

If you use more Oxis Turbuhaler than you should

If you use more Oxis Turbuhaler than you should, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately. You may experience the following effects: tremor, headache, or rapid heart rate.

If you forget to use Oxis Turbuhaler

  • If you forget to inhale a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case you can skip the missed dose.
  • Do nottake a double dose to make up for the missed doses.

If you have stopped using Oxis Turbuhaler

Do not stop using Oxis Turbuhaler without consulting your doctor.

If you have any additional questions about how to use your Turbuhaler, consult your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
