If dandruff persists for a long time and the use of shampoos does not produce visible results, the cause may not be related solely to dry scalp. This condition is often due to seborrheic dermatitis and overgrowth of fungi of the genus Malassezia (particularly Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta). Additionally, similar symptoms can be seen in cases of psoriasis, allergic reactions to hair care products, or alterations in the skin microbiome.
Among the factors that can aggravate the problem are stress, hormonal changes, lack of sleep, the use of aggressive hair care products and some dermatological diseases.
If dandruff does not go away and is accompanied by severe itching, redness of the scalp or scabbing, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist. A timely diagnosis will allow you to determine the exact cause of the condition and select the most effective treatment.
