1. What is Zinnat and what is it used for

Zinnat is an antibiotic used in adults and children. It works by killing the bacteria that cause infections. It belongs to a group of medicines called cephalosporins.

Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and are not effective against viral infections such as flu or common cold.

It is important that you follow the instructions regarding dose, intake, and duration of treatment indicated by your doctor.

Do not store or reuse this medication. If you have any leftover antibiotic after completing treatment, return it to the pharmacy for proper disposal. Do not throw medicines down the drain or in the trash.

Zinnat is used to treat infections of:

  • throat
  • nasal sinuses
  • middle ear
  • lungs or chest
  • urinary tract
  • skin and soft tissues.

Zinnat can also be used to:

  • treat Lyme disease (infection transmitted by ticks).

Your doctor may analyze the type of bacteria that cause your infection and check if the bacteria are sensitive to Zinnat during treatment.

Reconstitution Instructions

Instructions for preparing the suspension

Please note that the time required to prepare the Zinnat suspension before administering the first dose will be more than one hour. This includes the time for the suspension to settle in the refrigerator.

Follow the instructions below carefully when preparing and storing the Zinnat suspension for your child.

Black vial with rubber stopper and red arrows indicating movement of extraction and insertion of needle

Shake the bottle to loosen the contents. All granules should be completely loose in the bottle. Remove the bottle cap and pull off the foil seal. If this seal is damaged or missing, the medication should be returned to the pharmacist.

Pitcher pouring liquid into a measuring glass both with black outlines on a white background

Add to the bottle the total amount of cold water as indicated on the label or up to the volume line on the built-in measuring cup. If the water was previously boiled, let it cool to room temperature before adding it. Do not mix Zinnat granules for oral suspension with warm or hot liquids. Cold water should be used to avoid making the suspension too thick.

Black vial with open cap and red ampoule with indication 1 ml showing a small rectangular scale

Pour the total amount of cold water into the bottle. Replace the bottle cap. Let the bottle stand for approximately 1 minute to allow the water to soak the granules completely.

Hand holding an auto-injector device with red arrows indicating movement and a timer showing 15 seconds

Invert the bottle and shake vigorously (for at least 15 seconds) until all the granules have mixed with the water.

Vial with liquid and plunger showing arrows of movement up and down along with a syringe with 1 ml indication

Return the bottle to its original upright position and shake vigorously for at least 1 minute until all the granules have dissolved in the water. Store the Zinnat suspension immediately in the refrigerator, between 2°C and 8°C (do not freeze), and let it stand for at least one hour before taking the first dose.

The reconstituted suspension should be refrigerated at all times; when refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C, the reconstituted suspension can be stored for up to 10 days.

Always shake the bottle well before taking the medication.

For children who cannot take Zinnat using the spoon, a 5 ml graduated dosing syringe may be included in the packaging. If supplied, use this dosing syringe to measure the dose accurately:

  1. Remove the bottle cap. Keep it in a safe place.
  2. Hold the bottle firmly. Press the plastic adapter onto the neck of the bottle.
  3. Insert the syringe firmly into the adapter.
  4. Turn the bottle upside down.
  5. Pull the syringe plunger until the syringe contains the first part of the child's complete dose.
  6. Turn the bottle back to its original upright position. Remove the syringe from the adapter.
  7. Place the syringe in the child's mouth, putting the tip of the syringe inside the cheek. Press the plunger slowly, allowing time to swallow. Do not press abruptly to avoid directing a stream of liquid towards the back of the child's throat, as they may choke.
  8. Repeat steps 3 to 7 in the same way until the child has taken the entire dose.
  9. Remove the syringe from the bottle and rinse it well with clean water. Let the syringe dry completely before reusing it.
  10. Close the bottle tightly with the cap, leaving the adapter in place.
