About the medication

Introduction

Prospect: information for the patient

Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva 300mg/12,5mg film-coated tablets EFG

irbesartan / hydrochlorothiazide

Read this prospect carefully before starting to take this medication, as it contains important information for you.

  • Keep this prospect, as you may need to read it again.
  • If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  • This medication has been prescribed only to you and should not be given to others, even if they have the same symptoms as you, as it may harm them.
  • If you experience any adverse effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are not listed in this prospect. See section 4.

1. What is Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva and what is it used for

Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva is an association of two active principles, irbesartán and hidroclorotiazida. Irbesartan belongs to the group of medicines known as angiotensin-II receptor antagonists. Angiotensin-II is a substance produced in the body that binds to blood vessel receptors, causing them to contract. This results in an increase in blood pressure. Irbesartan prevents the binding of angiotensin-II to these receptors, relaxing blood vessels and reducing blood pressure. Hidroclorotiazida belongs to the group of medicines (called thiazide diuretics) that increase the amount of urine eliminated, reducing blood pressure.

The two active principles of Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida act together to achieve a decrease in blood pressure greater than that obtained with each one separately.

Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva is used to treat high blood pressure when treatment with irbesartan or hidroclorotiazida alone does not provide adequate control of your blood pressure.

2. What you need to know before starting to take Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva

Do not take Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva

  • if you are allergic to irbesartán or any of the other components of this medication(listed in section 6)
  • if you are allergic to hidroclorotiazida or to any other sulfonamide-derived medication
  • if you are more than 3 months pregnant (in any case, it is best to avoid taking this medication also at the beginning of your pregnancy – see Pregnancy section)
  • if you have severe liver or kidney problems
  • if you have difficulty urinating
  • if your doctor detects that you have persistently elevated calcium levels or low potassium levels in your blood.
  • if you have diabetes or kidney insufficiency and are being treated with a blood pressure medication containing aliskiren.

  • if you have liver problems
  • if you have diabetes
  • if you have lupus erythematosus (also known as lupus or LES)
  • if you have primary aldosteronism (a condition related to the overproduction of the aldosterone hormone, which causes sodium retention, and subsequently, an increase in blood pressure)
  • if you are taking any of the following medications used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension):

-a converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) (e.g., enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril), particularly if you have kidney problems related to diabetes.

- aliskiren

  • if you have had skin cancer or if you develop an unexpected skin lesion during treatment. The treatment with hidroclorotiazida, particularly its long-term use at high doses, may increase the risk of certain types of skin cancer and lip cancer (non-melanoma skin cancer). Protect your skin from sun exposure and UV rays while taking Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva

Your doctor may monitor your kidney function, blood pressure, and electrolyte levels in your blood (e.g., potassium) at regular intervals.

See also the information under the heading “Do not take Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva”.

If you are pregnant, if you suspect that you may be pregnantor if you plan to become pregnant, you must inform your doctor.

It is not recommended to use Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva at the beginning of pregnancy and in no case should it be administered from the third month of pregnancy because it may cause serious harm to your baby (see Pregnancy section).

You must also inform your doctor:

  • if you are following a low-sodium diet
  • if you experience any of the following symptoms, which may indicate an excessive effect of hidroclorotiazida (contained in Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva): feeling of thirst, dry mouth, generalized weakness, feeling of drowsiness, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, or rapid heartbeat
  • if you experience increased sensitivity to the sun with symptoms of sunburn (such as redness, itching, swelling, blisters) that occur more quickly than usual.
  • if you are to undergo surgery (surgical intervention) or if you are to receive anesthetics
  • if you experience changes in your vision or eye pain while taking Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva. This could be a sign of fluid accumulation in the vascular layer of the eye (choroidal hemorrhage) or development of glaucoma, increased pressure in your eyes. You must discontinue treatment with Irbesartán/Hidroclorotiazida Teva and seek medical attention.

The amount of hidroclorotiazida contained in this medication may cause positive results in doping control.
