1. What is Ezetimibe Alter and what is it used for

Ezetimibe Alter is a medicine used to lower high levels of cholesterol.

Ezetimibe Alter reduces the levels of total cholesterol, "bad" cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), and a type of fat called triglycerides in the blood. It also increases the levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).

Ezetimibe, the active ingredient in Ezetimibe Alter, works by reducing the amount of cholesterol absorbed in the gut.

Ezetimibe adds to the cholesterol-lowering effect of statins, a group of medicines that reduce the cholesterol produced by the body.

Cholesterol is one of the fats found in the bloodstream. Your total cholesterol level is made up mainly of LDL and HDL cholesterol.

LDL cholesterol is often called "bad" cholesterol because it can build up in the walls of your arteries, forming plaques. Over time, this buildup can lead to a narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing can slow down or block the flow of blood to vital organs such as the heart and brain. This blockage can cause a heart attack or stroke.

HDL cholesterol is often called "good" cholesterol because it helps prevent "bad" cholesterol from building up in the arteries and protects them from heart disease.

Triglycerides are another type of fat in your blood that can increase the risk of heart disease.

Ezetimibe Alter is used in patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet alone. While taking this medicine, you should also follow a cholesterol-lowering diet.

Ezetimibe Alter is used in combination with a cholesterol-lowering diet if you have:

  • high levels of cholesterol in the blood (primary hypercholesterolemia [heterozygous and non-familial])
  • in combination with a statin, when your cholesterol level is not well controlled with a statin alone
  • alone, when statin treatment is not appropriate or is not tolerated
  • a hereditary disease (homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) that increases the level of cholesterol in the blood. You will also be prescribed a statin and may be prescribed other treatments.

If you have heart disease, Ezetimibe Alter, in combination with cholesterol-lowering medicines called statins, reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, surgery to increase blood flow to the heart, or hospitalization for chest pain.

Ezetimibe Alter does not help you lose weight.

2. What you need to know before you take Ezetimibe Alter

If you are taking Ezetimibe Alter with a statin, please read the patient information leaflet that comes with that medicine.

Do not take Ezetimibe Alter

  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Warnings and precautions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking Ezetimibe Alter.

  • Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including allergies.
  • Your doctor will do a blood test before you start taking Ezetimibe Alter with a statin. This is to check that your liver is working well.
  • Your doctor may also want to do blood tests to check your liver again after you start taking Ezetimibe Alter with a statin.
