Agiolax granules belong to a group of medications called laxatives.

These medications work by facilitating the absorption of water by the intestinal bolus, forming a gel that increases the volume and fluidity of the stool. Agiolax granules act as an intestinal regulator, increasing the volume of the stool and stimulating evacuation.

Agiolax granules are used for:

  • Short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

You should consult a doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve after 3 days.

It should not be used for more than 1 week. Generally, it is sufficient to take this medication up to 2 or 3 times during a week.

After taking any other medication, wait 30 minutes to 1 hour before taking Agiolax. Similarly, Agiolax should not be administered 30 minutes to 1 hour before taking other medications.

If you are an insulin-dependent diabetic and take Agiolax with meals, you may need to reduce your insulin dose.

If you take more Agiolax granules than you should

The main symptoms are colic and severe diarrhea, with consequent loss of fluid and electrolytes, which should be replaced.

Treatment should be maintenance, with plenty of fluids. Electrolytes, especially potassium, should be monitored.

In case of overdose or accidental ingestion, consult the Toxicological Information Service, phone 915 62 04 20, indicating the medication and the amount ingested.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medications, this medication can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them:

Very rare serious side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):

  • After oral administration or skin contact, it can cause hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactic reactions.

Frequency not known (cannot be estimated from available data):

At the start of treatment and depending on the dose, some discomfort such as flatulence and/or a feeling of fullness may appear, characteristic of dietary fiber, which disappears after a few days without the need to discontinue treatment.

  • Reddish-brown discoloration (depending on pH) of the urine due to metabolites, which is of no importance.
  • Skin symptoms such as exanthema and/or itching.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Chronic use can lead to disorders in water and electrolyte balance and may cause albuminuria and hematuria.
  • Abdominal pain, spasms, and diarrhea, particularly in patients with irritable colon. However, these symptoms can also occur as a consequence of individual overdose. In such cases, dose reduction is necessary.
  • Pigmentation of the intestinal mucosa (pseudomelanosis coli), which usually reverses after the medication is discontinued.
  • Intestinal or esophageal obstruction, mainly if ingested with little liquid.
