1. What is Hidrasec 10 mg and what is it used for

Hidrasec 10 mg is a medication used to treat diarrhea.
Hidrasec 10 mg is a medication used to treat symptoms of acute diarrhea in children over three months of age. The medication should be taken with a large amount of fluids and a supporting diet when these are not sufficient to control diarrhea and when the diarrhea cannot be treated causally.
Racecadotril may be used as an adjunctive treatment when causal treatment is possible.

2. Important information before taking Hidrasec 10 mg

When not to take Hidrasec 10 mg

  • if the child is allergic to racecadotril or any of the other ingredients of Hidrasec 10 mg (listed in section 6)
  • if the child has intolerance to some sugars, consult a doctor before giving the child Hidrasec 10 mg
  • if the patient has ever experienced a severe skin rash or skin peeling after taking racecadotril.

Warnings and precautions

Before taking Hidrasec 10 mg, consult a doctor or pharmacist if:

  • the child is less than three months old
  • there is blood or pus in the stool and the child has a fever. The cause may be a bacterial infection that should be treated by a doctor
  • the child has chronic diarrhea or diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics
  • the child has kidney or liver function disorders
  • the child has prolonged or uncontrolled vomiting
  • the child has diabetes (see "Hidrasec 10 mg contains sucrose").

Racecadotril, the active substance of Hidrasec, may cause an allergic reaction called angioedema, which can cause swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue. If the child experiences such side effects, stop the treatment and contact a doctor immediately. Angioedema may occur at any time during treatment with this medication.
Taking this medication and some other medications at the same time may increase the risk of angioedema (see "Hidrasec 10 mg and other medications").
Skin reactions have been reported in association with the use of this medication. In most cases, they are mild and do not require treatment. In some cases, severe skin reactions may occur.
In such cases, stop the treatment immediately and do not give the child racecadotril again.
Severe skin reactions, including drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), have been reported with racecadotril. If the patient notices any symptoms associated with severe skin reactions described in section 4, stop taking racecadotril and seek medical advice immediately.
