Andrei Popov

General medicinePain medicine7 years of experience
Licence no. 464628925

Dr. Andrei Popov is a General Practitioner with specialized training in chronic pain. He provides online consultations for adult patients in Spain and other European countries.

Dr. Popov understands that seeking help with weight-related concerns or pain that has persisted for months can be difficult. Many patients come to him after trying different approaches without feeling truly heard. During the consultation, the doctor creates a comfortable and supportive, non-judgmental environment where the patient’s medical history can be discussed in detail, questions can be answered, and the next steps can be decided together.

Weight Management and Metabolic Health

Dr. Popov can help assess overweight, obesity, and related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or metabolic disorders. During the consultation, the patient’s medical history, test results, current medications, and previous treatments will be reviewed.

If you would like to learn about possible medication options or have already started treatment, the doctor can assess your situation, review the effectiveness and tolerability of the therapy, and clearly explain its benefits, potential risks, and alternatives.

Not every patient requires the same treatment. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription — it provides an objective medical assessment and a plan tailored to your individual situation.

Pain and General Medicine

You can also consult Dr. Popov regarding:

* chronic pain, migraines, neuralgia, and fibromyalgia;

* back, neck, lower back, or joint pain;

* hypertension, diabetes, and follow-up of chronic conditions;

* review of test results, medical reports, and current treatment;

* preventive medicine and a second medical opinion.

How the Consultation Works

The video consultation lasts up to 30 minutes. The doctor will listen carefully, review the information you provide, and explain the next steps in clear and understandable language.

If additional tests, an in-person consultation, or urgent medical care are required, the doctor will inform you directly.

Dr. Popov’s goal is to make sure the patient feels heard and leaves the consultation with a clear understanding of their condition and the next steps they can take.

A stye is a small, painful spot at the edge of the eyelid. It starts with the feeling that something has got into the eye; within a day or two a red swelling appears at that spot with a yellow head on top. It looks worse than it is: a stye almost always clears on its own, and the main thing asked of you is not to get in its way and not to do the things that turn it into a real problem.

What is going on in the eyelid

A row of small glands runs along the edge of the eyelid, and every eyelash has its own root with an oil gland. The duct of one of them blocks, bacteria multiply inside it — usually the ones already living on the skin — and a tiny abscess forms. Hence the appearance: a pinpoint of redness, swelling, tenderness to the touch, a gritty feeling on blinking. A stye can be external, next to the lashes, or internal, on the inner surface; the internal one hurts more and is only visible if the lid is turned back.

Usually there is just one, in one eye, though several can appear at once. A slightly watering eye and dislike of bright light are part of the normal picture. A stye is not really regarded as contagious: better not to share a towel at home, but there is no need to keep a child off nursery because of one.

How long it lasts and what actually helps

The usual course is a week to ten days or so. The spot ripens, opens on its own, releases a drop of pus, and everything settles quickly. There is no real way to speed that up, but a few things make the journey easier.

  • A warm compress. Soak a clean flannel in warm water, wring it out and hold it against the closed lid for five to ten minutes, three or four times a day. The water should be comfortably warm, not hot. Warmth softens the thick contents of the blocked duct and helps them come out: it is the one home measure that genuinely works.
  • Gentle lid-margin hygiene. After the compress, wipe the edge of the lid carefully along the lash line, with damp cotton wool or a ready-made lid wipe. No pressure and no attempt to scrub it clean.
  • Painkillers if the lid is really sore: ordinary over-the-counter ones will do. Aspirin is not given to children and adolescents.

Antibiotic ointments and drops are not needed for an ordinary stye: the cause is a blockage rather than a spreading infection, and drops do not make it ripen any faster. A doctor prescribes them only in particular situations, for instance when the inflammation is spreading beyond the spot itself.

What not to do

  • Do not squeeze it and do not pierce it. This is the main rule. The eyelid has a rich blood supply and its veins connect with veins inside the skull; squeezing pushes the pus inwards and turns a harmless spot into a spreading infection. Wait for it to open by itself.
  • Do not pull out the eyelash and do not pick at the crust.
  • Do not wear contact lenses until it has all settled: glasses only. The pair you were wearing when it began is best replaced.
  • Do not wear eye make-up. Mascara, eyeliner and shadow on an inflamed lid keep the duct blocked. The make-up you were using just before the stye appeared is best thrown away, because it is already contaminated.
  • Do not apply dry heat until it stings, and do not put alcohol dabs, tea bags or other home remedies on the eye itself.

Stye or chalazion

The two are confused constantly, and they are handled differently. A stye is acute: it hurts, it is red, it ripens over a few days and it goes within roughly a week. A chalazion is a firm, painless lump inside the thickness of the lid, left behind after the inflammation has died down: the gland blocked, its contents thickened and stayed inside as a capsule. It does not hurt, the skin over it is a normal colour, and it sits there for weeks or months.

The starting point is the same: warm compresses and lid hygiene, only for longer and more persistently — many chalazia disappear that way. If the lump stays for months, gets in the way of seeing, presses on the cornea and distorts vision, or is simply very noticeable, it is removed by an eye specialist in a small procedure under local anaesthetic from the inner side of the lid.

There is a third possibility: if the lid is red and swollen but there is no firm lump at all, and the eye waters and sticks together in the morning, this is more likely inflammation of the lid margins or conjunctivitis, and the approach differs. A separate warning sign is a lump that keeps coming back in the same place, with loss of lashes or a change in the shape of the lid margin — that always needs to be shown to a doctor.

When you need to be seen the same day

A stye is harmless for exactly as long as the inflammation stays confined to that small point at the lid margin. If it spreads beyond it and takes in the tissues around the eye, that is orbital cellulitis: a condition treated in hospital with intravenous antibiotics and one that threatens sight. In children it moves particularly fast.

Get medical help the same day if any of the following appears:

  • the redness and swelling are spreading across the whole lid and the skin around the eye, and the eye is closing up and cannot be opened;
  • it hurts to move the eye, or the eye has become hard to turn;
  • vision has become worse, or double vision has appeared;
  • the eye looks as though it is pushed forwards;
  • there is a temperature or shivering, or a child has become listless;
  • severe pain inside the eye itself rather than in the lid, with marked dislike of light.

It is also worth seeing a doctor, though less urgently, in quieter situations: a stye that has not gone after more than two weeks, one that keeps coming back, several appearing at once, or styes in someone with diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Why it keeps coming back

One stye is chance. A run of them nearly always means there is something underneath, and most often that is chronic inflammation of the lid margins: the glands produce a thick secretion and the ducts block easily. Rosacea, dry eye, the habit of rubbing the eyes, persistent lack of sleep and stress all contribute, and in teenagers so do hormonal changes. Diabetes is worth a thought of its own when an adult starts getting styes one after another for no obvious reason.

What genuinely reduces how often they come:

  • daily lid hygiene: a warm compress and a wipe of the lid margin in the morning, especially where there is inflammation of the lid margins — done continuously rather than as a course;
  • removing eye make-up at night, not using anyone else's, and replacing mascara regularly;
  • washing hands before touching the eyes and before handling lenses, sticking to the wearing schedule and not sleeping in them;
  • treating what lies underneath — rosacea, dry eye, inflammation of the lid margins: these are manageable, but not in a week.

Online consultation

A remote appointment answers the main question well: is this a stye or something else, and is it enough to wait. From a photograph of the lid and your description, the doctor can separate a stye from a chalazion and from inflammation of the lid margins, explain how to do the compresses and the hygiene properly, and say what timescale to expect in your case. They can go through a pattern of repeated styes and suggest what is worth checking when they keep arriving one after another. And they can help decide when it is time to see an eye specialist about a long-standing lump, and what will happen there. The signs in the urgent section are not something to handle remotely: those need to be seen in person the same day.
