Package Leaflet: Information for the User
Humalog 100 units/ml solution for injection in vial
insulin lispro
Read all of this leaflet carefully before you start using this medicine because it contains important information for you.
Contents of the pack
Humalog is used to treat diabetes. Humalog works more quickly than normal human insulin because the insulin molecule has been changed slightly.
You have diabetes if your pancreas does not make enough insulin to control the level of glucose in your blood. Humalog is a substitute for your own insulin and is used to control your glucose levels on a long-term basis. It acts quickly and its effects do not last as long as those of a soluble insulin (between 2 to 5 hours). Normally, Humalog is used shortly before a meal.
Your doctor may prescribe Humalog in addition to a longer-acting insulin. Each of these has its own patient information leaflet with specific instructions. Do not change your insulin unless your doctor has told you to do so. Be very careful if you change your insulin.
Use of Humalog is suitable for adults and children.
Do not use Humalog
Warnings and precautions
You should plan your meals, physical activity and administration of Humalog in advance. You should also monitor your blood sugar levels regularly by performing blood glucose tests.
Other medicines and Humalog
Your insulin needs may change if you are taking
Tell your doctor if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines, including those obtained without a prescription (see section “Warnings and precautions”).
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Are you pregnant or breast-feeding, or thinking of becoming pregnant? The amount of insulin you need usually decreases during the first three months of pregnancy and increases during the next six months. If you are breast-feeding, you may need to adjust your insulin dose or diet. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Driving and using machines
Your ability to concentrate or react may be reduced if you have hypoglycaemia. Be aware of this potential risk in all situations where you might put yourself and others at risk (e.g. driving a car or operating machinery). You should contact your doctor for advice on driving if you
Humalog contains sodium
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per dose, i.e. essentially “sodium-free”.
Follow exactly the instructions for administration of this medicine given by your doctor.
In case of doubt, consult your doctor again.

If you use more Humalog than you should
If you use more Humalog than you need, you may experience hypoglycaemia. Check your blood sugar levels.
If your blood sugar levels are low (mild hypoglycaemia), take glucose tablets, sugar or a sugary drink. Then eat fruit, biscuits or a sandwich, as your doctor has advised, and rest. This usually helps to bring your blood sugar levels back up. If you do not feel better soon, contact your doctor.
If you forget to use Humalog
If you use less Humalog than you need, you may experience hyperglycaemia. Check your blood sugar levels.
If you do not treat these situations, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) can be very serious and even cause unconsciousness or death (see section 4 “Possible side effects”).
Three simple measuresto avoid hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia are:
If you stop using Humalog

• | flushed face | • | fruity smell on the breath |
• | thirst | • | nausea or vomiting |
Severe symptoms are heavy breathing and a fast pulse. Seek medical help immediately.
