1. What is Viru-POS and what is it used for

Viru-POS eye ointment prevents the multiplication of certain viruses.
The indication for use is keratitis caused by the herpes simplex virus.

2. Important information before using Viru-POS

When not to use Viru-POS

Warnings and precautions

Before starting treatment with Viru-POS, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist.
Wearing contact lenses during treatment of viral corneal infections with Viru-POS is contraindicated.
To ensure optimal treatment with Viru-POS, treatment should be started as soon as possible.
During treatment, you should visit your doctor 2-3 times a week for a check-up.
Immediately after applying the ointment, a transient, mild stinging sensation may occur.

Viru-POS and other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, or have recently taken, and any medicines you plan to take.
No interactions with other medicines are known.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to have a child, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Your doctor will only consider prescribing aciclovir if the expected benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the fetus or baby.

Driving and using machines

Due to its consistency, the ointment temporarily impairs vision, which should be taken into account when driving, operating machinery, or using hazardous tools.

3. How to use Viru-POS

This medicine should always be used as directed by your doctor. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
If you are using other eye drops or ointments, wait 15 minutes between each medicine and always apply the eye ointment last.
The recommended dose is a 1 cm long strip of ointment from the tube, which should be applied 5 times a day to the lower conjunctival sac (the pocket formed by pulling down the lower eyelid) every 4 hours, with a break at night. Treatment should continue for at least 3 days after the lesions have healed.
When applying the ointment, do not touch the eye, face, or any other surface with the tip of the tube.
Tilt your head back slightly and pull down the lower eyelid, placing the correct amount of ointment in the lower conjunctival sac. Then, close your eyelid slowly. After use, close the tube tightly.
If you feel that the effect of Viru-POS is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

Using more Viru-POS than recommended

If you use more of this medicine than recommended, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Missing a dose of Viru-POS

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any further questions about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects have been observed:
Very common (more than 1 in 10 patients): punctate superficial keratitis, which usually does not require premature discontinuation of treatment and heals without noticeable harmful effects.
Common (more than 1 in 100, but less than 1 in 10 patients): conjunctivitis and mild, transient burning sensation occurring immediately after application of the ointment.
Rare (more than 1 in 10,000, but less than 1 in 1,000 patients): blepharitis has occurred.
Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 patients): immediate hypersensitivity reactions with angioedema (Quincke's edema, pale swelling, mainly of the face), urticaria may occur.
If severe allergic reactions (swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, tongue, throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, rash, urticaria) occur, discontinue use of the medicine and contact your doctor or the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital immediately.
If treatment needs to be discontinued due to side effects, inform your doctor, who will prescribe another medicine.

5. How to store Viru-POS

Keep the medicine out of sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
Do not store above 25°C.
Shelf-life after first opening of the tube: 1 month.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. This will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Viru-POS contains

The active substance is 30 mg of aciclovir.
The other ingredient is white petrolatum.

What Viru-POS looks like and contents of the pack

Viru-POS is a white-grey ointment in an aluminum tube with a screw cap.
The tube contains 4.5 g of ointment.
