Package Leaflet: Information for the Patient

Please dissolve the solvent for the preparation of the injection solution
Human coagulation factor IX
You should carefully read the contents of the leaflet before using the medicine, as it contains important information for the patient.
You should keep this leaflet, so that you can read it again if you need to.
If you have any doubts, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine has been prescribed for the treatment of a specific person. Do not pass it on to others. The medicine may harm another person, even if the symptoms are the same.
If the patient experiences any side effects, including any side effects not listed in the leaflet, they should inform their doctor or pharmacist. See section 4.

Table of Contents of the Leaflet:

  1. What is BETAFAC T 500 IU and what is it used for
  2. How to use BETAFAC T 500 IU
  3. Possible side effects of BETAFAC T 500 IU
  4. How to store BETAFAC T 500 IU
  5. Contents of the pack and other information

BETAFAC T 500 IU is a medicine belonging to the group of antihemorrhagic medicines. The active substance is human coagulation factor IX. It is a protein that occurs naturally in the human body. The function of this protein is to ensure the proper blood clotting process and prevent prolonged bleeding.
BETAFAC T 500 IU is used to compensate for the lack of coagulation factor IX, thereby preventing and treating bleeding (hemorrhages) in patients with hemophilia B.
Hemophilia B is a hereditary disease associated with a lack of protein called coagulation factor IX. This deficiency leads to clotting disorders.

2. Important Information Before Using BETAFAC T 500 IU

BETAFAC T 500 IU should not be used

  • if the patient is allergic to human coagulation factor IX or any other component of this medicine (see section 6).
  • if the patient has an allergy to human proteins.

Special caution should be exercised when using BETAFAC T 500 IU

  • If the patient develops a fever or flu-like symptoms, they should consult a doctor.
  • If the patient has previously received factor IX preparations, they may develop inhibitors. Inhibitors are antibodies that neutralize the action of factor IX.

If the patient has inhibitors, the effectiveness of BETAFAC T 500 IU may be reduced.
The patient should inform their doctor if they have inhibitors.
In the event of an allergic reaction, the administration of the medicine should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include: itching, rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, dizziness, headache.
In rare cases, after administration of factor IX preparations, symptoms such as: chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cough, fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting may occur.
If such symptoms occur, the administration of the medicine should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted.
Using BETAFAC T 500 IU with other medicines
The patient should inform their doctor about all medicines they are taking, including those available without a prescription.
Some medicines may affect the action of BETAFAC T 500 IU.
The patient should avoid taking anticoagulant medicines (e.g., warfarin, heparin) at the same time, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There is not enough data on the use of BETAFAC T 500 IU during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The medicine should only be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risk to the fetus or baby.
The patient should consult a doctor before using the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

3. How to Use BETAFAC T 500 IU

BETAFAC T 500 IU will be administered by a doctor.
The dose and frequency of administration of the medicine depend on:

  • the type and severity of the bleeding
  • the patient's body weight
  • the level of coagulation factor IX in the patient's blood
  • the presence of inhibitors

The doctor will determine the appropriate dose and frequency of administration of the medicine for each patient individually.
BETAFAC T 500 IU is administered intravenously.
Before administration, the lyophilizate should be dissolved in the appropriate solvent (water for injection).
The solution should be administered slowly, monitoring the patient's condition.

4. Possible Side Effects of BETAFAC T 500 IU

Like all medicines, BETAFAC T 500 IU can cause side effects, although not all patients will experience them.
Common side effects (may occur in 1 to 10 out of 100 patients):

  • allergic reactions (e.g., itching, rash, hives)
  • headache
  • nausea
  • increased body temperature

Uncommon side effects (may occur in 1 to 10 out of 1,000 patients):

  • difficulty breathing
  • dizziness
  • chest pain
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

Rare side effects (may occur in 1 to 10 out of 10,000 patients):

  • severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing)
  • vein inflammation at the injection site
  • development of inhibitors (antibodies that neutralize the action of factor IX)

Very rare side effects (may occur less frequently than 1 in 10,000 patients):

  • pulmonary embolism
  • myocardial infarction
  • stroke

If any side effects occur, the patient should inform their doctor or pharmacist.

When to Exercise Special Caution When Using BETAFAC T 500 IU

Risk of blood clots
Due to the existing risk of improper blood clot formation (thromboembolic complications), the doctor should assess the potential benefits of treatment with human coagulation factor IX in the following situations:

  • in patients with signs of blood clot degradation (fibrinolysis),
  • in patients who develop numerous blood clots in the peripheral blood (disseminated intravascular coagulation),
  • in newborns,
  • in patients with abnormally high blood clotting,
  • in patients with liver disease.

The doctor should refer the patient for a blood test to detect signs of these complications as soon as possible.

Risk of Cardiovascular Events

In the event of the patient having cardiovascular risk factors, the doctor should assess the potential benefits of treatment with human coagulation factor IX.

Risk of Allergic Reaction

Due to the risk of an allergic reaction (see section 4) caused by the administration of factor IX, the first injection of BETAFAC T 500 IU must be performed under medical supervision, allowing for immediate treatment of an allergic reaction if necessary (see section 4).
The doctor must inform the patient about the possible symptoms of an allergic reaction and consult a doctor to initiate appropriate treatment, depending on the type and severity of the reaction.
After repeated treatment with BETAFAC T 500 IU, the patient's immune system may react to factor IX by producing inhibitors (antibodies against factor IX). The appearance of such inhibitors may reduce the effectiveness of treatment. The doctor must regularly perform blood tests to check for the presence of such inhibitors and to determine their quantity.

A link has been established between the administration of factor IX inhibitors and the occurrence of allergic reactions in patients treated with factor IX concentrates.

In the event of an allergic reaction, treatment should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted to initiate appropriate treatment.

Other

In patients receiving regular factor IX concentrates, neutralizing antibodies to factor IX may develop. Monitoring of factor IX levels is necessary to determine the dose of the drug.

He works with adults and children, helping patients with urgent symptoms, infections, sudden health changes and everyday medical concerns that require timely evaluation. His background includes clinical practice in France, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates, which allows him to navigate different healthcare systems and manage a wide range of conditions with confidence. Patients value his calm, structured approach, clear explanations and evidence-based decision-making.

Online consultations with Dr. Lokchiri are suitable for many situations when someone needs quick medical guidance, reassurance or a clear next step. Common reasons for booking include:

  • fever, chills, fatigue and viral symptoms
  • cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, breathing discomfort
  • bronchitis and mild asthma flare-ups
  • nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, digestive infections
  • rashes, allergic reactions, redness, insect bites
  • muscle or joint pain, mild injuries, sprains
  • headache, dizziness, migraine symptoms
  • stress-related symptoms, sleep disturbances

Many patients reach out when symptoms appear suddenly and cause concern, when a child becomes unwell unexpectedly, when a rash changes or spreads, or when it’s unclear whether an in-person examination is necessary. Some situations are not suitable for online care.
