IMT medical certificate online in Portugal – cost & validity
Learn who needs the IMT atestado médico, which categories it covers (A, A1, AM, B, BE), the €39 fee and six-month validity, and how to secure it online in 24 hours.

Who needs an IMT medical certificate?
An IMT medical certificate—also called an atestado médico IMT—is mandatory whenever Portuguese law requires proof of fitness to drive. It applies to the most common licence categories that do not need a psychological assessment: A, A1, AM, B, BE.
You’ll be asked for this certificate in three main situations:
• applying for your very first Portuguese driving licence,
• renewing an expired or soon-to-expire licence,
• exchanging an EU or non-EU foreign licence for a Portuguese one.
In each case, the document confirms that you meet IMT’s health standards for safe driving.
A licensed Portuguese doctor reviews your medical history—vision, mobility, chronic conditions—and signs the certificate online. Fee: €39. Validity: 6 months. Once approved, the certificate is uploaded directly to IMT and a PDF copy is sent to you for your records.

Can I get my IMT certificate online?
Yes — the entire IMT medical certificate online process takes place through a secure portal. First, complete a short form with your driving-licence details and health history. For most applicants this takes less than five minutes.
If the doctor needs more information, you’ll have a brief video call (usually under ten minutes). After reviewing your answers, the licensed Portuguese doctor signs the certificate. Fee: €39. Processing time: 24 hours.
Once approved, the certificate is uploaded to the official IMT system and a PDF copy is stored in your Oladoctor account. The document is valid for six months, so finish your driving-licence renewal or foreign-licence exchange before it expires.

What documents do I need?
Have these documents ready when requesting your online IMT certificate: (1) a valid passport or Portuguese residence card, (2) your full name, date of birth and current driving-licence details, and (3) the Portuguese tax number NIF and your Número de Utente (national health-service number). Both identifiers are mandatory because the doctor must log the certificate in the e-health system before it is transferred to IMT. Collect everything first—the form normally takes under five minutes when the data is at hand.
Provide complete and accurate medical information, including any medication or conditions that could affect driving. Precise details let the doctor certify you without follow-up questions and avoid delays. If additional clarification is needed, you may be invited to a short video call; most calls last under ten minutes and focus on vision, mobility and any chronic issues relevant to safe driving.
The service is open to Portuguese citizens and foreign residents alike; you do not need SNS insurance coverage to use it, only to be physically in Portugal at the time of request. All data is encrypted end-to-end and handled according to Portuguese medical-privacy rules (RGPD), ensuring your application remains fully compliant and legally sound while speeding up the electronic submission to IMT.
