IMT medical certificate for driving licence in Portugal

An IMT medical certificate — also called an atestado médico IMT or “fitness-to-drive certificate”—is mandatory whenever Portuguese traffic law requires proof of medical fitness to drive. The legal basis is Decree-Law 138/2012, Article 25-A. The rule covers all Group 1 licence categories that do not need a psychological assessment: A, A1, AM, B and BE.

You must present this certificate in three common scenarios:

• Applying for your first Portuguese driving licence;
• Renewing a licence that is expired or about to expire;
• Exchanging an EU or non-EU foreign licence for a Portuguese one.

Have these papers ready before you request your online IMT medical certificate:

1. A valid passport or Portuguese residence card.
2. Your full name, date of birth and current driving-licence details.
