Tibolone
Tibolone Aristo is used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It contains tibolone, a synthetic sex hormone. Tibolone Aristo is used for women who have undergone menopause, at least 12 months after their last natural menstrual period.
During menopause, the amount of estrogen produced by the woman's body decreases. This can cause symptoms such as hot flashes on the face, neck, and chest.
Taking HRT or Tibolone Aristo involves risks that need to be analyzed before deciding to start or continue taking the medicine.
If any of the following conditions apply to you, or if you are unsure about any of the following points, consult your doctor before taking Tibolone Aristo:
If you have or have had breast cancer, or if there is a suspicion of breast cancer.
If you have an estrogen-dependent tumor, such as endometrial cancer, or if there is a suspicion of such a tumor.
If you have vaginal bleeding of unknown origin.
If you have untreated endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the lining of the uterus).
If you have or have had blood clots in the veins (thrombosis), such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
If you have blood clotting disorders (e.g., protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency).
If you have or have had diseases caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as heart attack, stroke, or angina.
If you have or have had liver disease and liver function tests have not returned to normal.
If you have a rare blood disorder called porphyria, which is inherited.
If you are allergic to tibolone or any of the other ingredients of Tibolone Aristo (listed in section 6).
If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
If you are breastfeeding.
If any of the above conditions occur for the first time while taking Tibolone Aristo, stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor immediately.
Before taking Tibolone Aristo, discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.
if any of the following conditions occur while taking HRT or Tibolone Aristo:
swelling and redness of the legs
sudden chest pain
difficulty breathing
Observational studies have shown that women taking tibolone (the active substance in Tibolone Aristo) have an increased risk of developing endometrial cancer. This risk increases with the duration of treatment.
Irregular bleeding or spotting may occur during the first 3-6 months of taking Tibolone Aristo. However, if bleeding or spotting:
continues for more than 6 months
starts after 6 months of taking Tibolone Aristo
continues after stopping Tibolone Aristo
→ consult your doctor immediately.
Data confirm that taking tibolone increases the risk of breast cancer. The additional risk depends on the duration of treatment.
dimpling of the skin
changes in the nipple
any lumps that can be seen or felt
Ovarian cancer is rare, much rarer than breast cancer. Taking HRT that contains only estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progestogen has been associated with a slightly increased risk of ovarian cancer.
The risk of blood clots in the veins is about 1.3 to 3 times higher in women taking HRT than in women not taking HRT, especially in the first year of treatment.
There is no evidence that HRT or Tibolone Aristo prevents heart attacks.
The risk of stroke is 1.5 times higher in women taking HRT than in women not taking HRT.
HRT does not prevent memory loss. There is some evidence that starting HRT after the age of 65 may increase the risk of memory loss.
Certain medicines may affect the action of Tibolone Aristo, which may lead to irregular bleeding. These include:
blood-thinning medicines (e.g., warfarin)
medicines for epilepsy (e.g., phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine)
medicines for tuberculosis (e.g., rifampicin or rifabutin)
herbal preparations containing St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
If a blood test is required, inform your doctor or laboratory staff that you are taking Tibolone Aristo, as this medicine may affect the results of some tests.
Do not take Tibolone Aristo if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tibolone Aristo does not affect the ability to drive or use machines.
