  • This medicine has been prescribed for you. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.

1. What is Taconal and what is it used for

Taconal is an ointment for topical use on the skin. The medicine contains the antibiotic mupirocin, which acts on bacteria that cause most skin infections, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains and other staphylococci or streptococci.

Indications

Local treatment of bacterial skin infections (e.g. impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis) caused by Staphylococcus aureusbacteria, including methicillin-resistant strains and other staphylococci or streptococci.

2. Important information before using Taconal

When not to use Taconal

  • if you are allergic to mupirocin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
  • on extensive burns;
  • in the eyes;
  • in the nose;
  • on mucous membranes.

Warnings and precautions

Since the medicine contains excipients – macrogols, before starting the treatment with Taconal, consult your doctor or pharmacist:

  • if you have kidney function disorders;
  • if you have open wounds or damaged skin. Before starting the treatment with Taconal, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.

If an allergic reaction or severe skin changes occur at the site of application of Taconal, discontinue treatment, wash the medicine off the skin surface, and contact your doctor immediately.
During the use of Taconal, avoid contact of the medicine with the eyes. In case of accidental eye contact with the medicine, rinse them thoroughly with a large amount of cool water.
Do not use the medicine for longer than prescribed by your doctor, as this may cause the development of bacterial strains resistant to the active substance – the antibiotic mupirocin.

Taconal and other medicines

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking or have recently taken, as well as the medicines you plan to take.
No interactions of Taconal ointment with other medicines are known.
Do not apply the medicine to the skin at the same time as other medicines.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to have a child, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
The medicine may be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.

Driving and using machines

The effect of mupirocin on the ability to drive and use machines is not known.
Taconal contains macrogols(see "Warnings and precautions").

3. How to use Taconal

This medicine should always be used as directed by your doctor. If you are unsure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Method of administration
The medicine is intended for use on the skin.
Apply the medicine to the affected areas of the skin 2 to 3 times a day, usually for up to 10 days.
Apply a small amount of the medicine to the affected area of the skin using a piece of clean cotton wool or a gauze. The medicine should be applied to clean, dry skin. After each application of the medicine, wash your hands thoroughly.
If necessary, the treated skin area can be covered with an occlusive dressing.
Do not apply the medicine to the skin at the same time as other medicines.
Do not use the medicine for longer than 10 days. If the symptoms worsen or do not improve, contact your doctor.

Using more Taconal than recommended

If you have used more medicine than recommended, immediately wash off the applied ointment with soap and water, and then apply the recommended amount of the medicine.
In case of ingestion of Taconal, immediately contact your doctor and inform them about what and how much has been ingested.

Missing a dose of Taconal

Use the medicine as soon as possible. Do not use a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
If you have any further questions about using the medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Taconal can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Common(occurring in 1 to 10 users in 100):

  • burning sensation at the site of application of the medicine.

Uncommon(occurring in 1 to 10 users in 1,000):

  • itching, redness;
  • prickling sensation and dryness at the site of application of the medicine;
  • skin hypersensitivity reactions.

Very rare(occurring in less than 1 user in 10,000):

  • systemic hypersensitivity reactions.

If you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms, discontinue the medicine and contact your doctor.

If you experience any side effects, including those not listed in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.

5. How to store Taconal

Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Store in a temperature below 25°C. Do not freeze.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the tube and carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. This will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Taconal contains

The active substance of the medicine is mupirocin.
1 g of ointment contains 20 mg of mupirocin.
The other ingredients are: macrogol 3350, macrogol 400.

What Taconal looks like and contents of the pack

The medicine is an ointment.
The pack contains:

  • an aluminum tube with a membrane and a screw cap, containing 15 g of ointment, in a cardboard box;
  • an aluminum tube with a screw cap, containing 8 g of ointment, in a cardboard box.
