1. What is Suvardio and what is it used for

Suvardio belongs to a group of medicines called statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors).
Your doctor has prescribed Suvardio to you because:

  • You have high blood cholesterol levels. This means you are at risk of having a heart attackor stroke. Suvardio is used to treat high cholesterol in adults, adolescents, and children aged 6 years or older.

Your doctor has recommended taking a statin because changing your diet and increasing the amount of physical exercise did not lower your blood cholesterol levels enough. While taking Suvardio, you should continue to follow a cholesterol-lowering diet and exercise regularly.
Or

  • You have other factors that increase your risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or related health problems.

A heart attack, stroke, and other health problems can be caused by a disease called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is caused by the buildup of lipid deposits in the arteries.

Why is taking Suvardio so important?

Suvardio is used to balance the levels of fats (lipids) in the blood, mainly cholesterol.
There are different types of cholesterol in the blood - so-called "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C) and so-called "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol or HDL-C).
Suvardio can lower the level of "bad" cholesterol and increase the level of "good" cholesterol.
The medicine helps reduce the production of "bad" cholesterol in the body and improves the body's ability to remove it from the blood.
High cholesterol levels are symptom-free and do not affect the well-being of most people.
However, if left untreated, lipids can accumulate in the walls of blood vessels, causing them to narrow. As a result of narrowing, it is possible to block the lumen of the blood vessel and cut off blood flow to the heart or brain, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Correcting blood cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke. By lowering cholesterol levels, you can reduce the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, and similar health problems.
Suvardio must be taken continuously, even if your cholesterol levels return to normal, as it prevents the cholesterol levels from rising againand the accumulation of lipid deposits in the blood vessels. However, the medicine should be discontinued if your doctor advises you to do so or if you become pregnant.

2. Important information before taking Suvardio

When not to take Suvardio

if you are allergic to rosuvastatinor any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking Suvardio, you should stop taking the medicine immediatelyand inform your doctor.
During treatment with Suvardio, you should avoid becoming pregnant by using effective contraception methods.
if you have liver disease.
if you have severe kidney disease.
if you experience recurring or unexplained muscle pain(myopathy).
if you are taking sofosbuvir and velpatasvir and voxilaprevir(used to treat viral hepatitis C infection).
if you are taking cyclosporin(a medicine used, for example, after organ transplantation).
If any of the above applies to you (or you are unsure), you should consult your doctor again.

In addition, Suvardio should not be taken at a dose of 40 mg (the highest) if:

you have experienced recurring or unexplained muscle pain(myopathy) in the past, or if you or your family members have had muscle disorders, or if your previous muscle problems were related to taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines.
you have moderate kidney function impairment(if in doubt, ask your doctor).
you have abnormal thyroid function.
you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol.
you are taking other medicines (fibrates)to lower cholesterol levels.
you are of Asian origin(you are Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, or Indian).

Warnings and precautions

You should discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist if:
you have kidney function impairment;
you have liver function impairment;
you have severe respiratory failure;
you have experienced recurring or unexplained muscle pain(myopathy) in the past, or if you or your family members have had muscle disorders, or if your previous muscle problems were related to taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines. In case of unexplained muscle pain, especially accompanied by a feeling of illness or fever, you should contact your doctor immediately. You should also inform your doctor or pharmacist about persistent muscle weakness.
you have or have had myasthenia(a disease that causes general muscle weakness, including in some cases muscles involved in breathing) or ocular myasthenia (a disease that causes muscle weakness in the eyes), as statins can sometimes exacerbate symptoms of the disease or lead to the development of myasthenia (see section 4).
you have or have had a severe skin rash or skin peeling and blisters and (or) ulcers in the mouth
after taking rosuvastatin or similar medicines.
you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol;
you have abnormal thyroid function;

If any of the above applies to you (or you are unsure):
do not take Suvardio at the highest dose (40 mg) and consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment with Suvardio at any dose.
Severe skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), have been reported with rosuvastatin. If you experience any of the symptoms described in section 4, you should stop taking Suvardio and contact your doctor immediately.
A small number of patients taking statins may experience liver problems. This can be detected by a simple blood test to check for increased liver enzyme activity. For this reason, your doctor will usually arrange for such tests to be done before and during treatment with Suvardio.
During treatment with this medicine, your doctor will closely monitor your condition if you have diabetes or are at risk of developing diabetes. The risk of developing diabetes is more likely in people with high blood sugar and lipid levels, who are overweight, and have high blood pressure.

Suvardio and other medicines

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking now or have taken recently, and about any medicines you plan to take.
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

3. How to take Suvardio

This medicine should always be taken exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Doses usually used in adults

Taking Suvardio to lower cholesterol levels

Starting dose

Treatment starts with a dose of 5 mg or 10 mg, even if you have taken a higher dose of another statin before. The choice of starting dose will depend on:

  • cholesterol levels,
  • the risk of heart attack or stroke in your particular case,
  • the presence of factors that may increase the risk of side effects.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist about the most suitable starting dose of Suvardio for you.
Your doctor may recommend that you start with the lowest dose (5 mg) if:

  • you are of Asian origin (you are Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, or Indian),
  • you are over 70 years old,
  • you have moderate kidney function impairment,
  • you are at risk of muscle pain (myopathy).

Increasing the dose and maximum daily dose

Your doctor may decide to increase the dose of Suvardio so that you receive the most suitable dose for you. If the starting dose is 5 mg, your doctor may double it to 10 mg, then to 20 mg, and if necessary, to 40 mg. If the starting dose is 10 mg, your doctor may double it to 20 mg and if necessary to 40 mg. Dose changes are made every 4 weeks.
The maximum dose of Suvardio is 40 mg. It is intended only for patients with high cholesterol levels and a high risk of heart attack or stroke, for whom the 20 mg dose did not lower cholesterol levels sufficiently.

Taking Suvardio to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or related health problems

The recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. However, your doctor may recommend a lower dose if you have any of the above risk factors.

Taking Suvardio in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years

The dose range for children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years is 5 to 20 mg once daily. The starting dose is usually 5 mg once daily, and your doctor may gradually increase it to find the most suitable dose of Suvardio for you. The maximum daily dose of Suvardio is 10 mg or 20 mg for children aged 6 to 17 years, depending on the disease being treated. The prescribed dose is taken once daily. Suvardio 40 mg tablets should not be usedin children.

How to take the medicine

Swallow the tablets whole with water.
Suvardio should be taken once daily, at any time of day, with or without food.
Try to take your tablets at the same time each day to help you remember to take them.

Regular monitoring of cholesterol levels

It is important to visit your doctor regularly to check your cholesterol levels and make sure you have reached and are maintaining a healthy level.
Your doctor may decide to increase the dose of Suvardio to achieve the most suitable dose for you.

Taking a higher dose of Suvardio than recommended

Contact your doctor or the nearest hospital for advice.
If you go to the hospital or are treated for another reason, tell the medical staff that you are taking Suvardio.

Missing a dose of Suvardio

If you miss a dose, take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Stopping Suvardio treatment

Inform your doctor if you want to stop taking Suvardio. If you stop taking Suvardio, your cholesterol levels may rise again.
If you have any further questions about taking this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
