| Simvacard contains the active substance simvastatin. Simvacard is a medicine used to | |
| reduce the level of total cholesterol, "bad" cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), and fatty substances called triglycerides in the blood. Additionally, Simvacard increases the level of "good" cholesterol (HDL cholesterol). Simvacard belongs to a group of medicines called statins. | |
| Cholesterol is one of several fatty substances present in the blood. Total cholesterol is mainly composed of LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. | |
| LDL cholesterol is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol because it can accumulate on the walls of arteries, forming plaques. Eventually, these plaques can cause the arteries to narrow, restricting or blocking blood flow to vital organs such as the heart and brain. Reduced blood flow can lead to heart attacks or strokes. | |
| HDL cholesterol is often referred to as "good" cholesterol because it helps prevent the accumulation of bad cholesterol in the arteries and protects against heart disease. | |
| Triglycerides are another type of fat present in the blood, which can contribute to the increased risk of developing heart disease. | |
| The risk of heart disease is also increased by high levels of triglycerides and low levels of HDL cholesterol. | |
| While taking this medicine, you should follow a cholesterol-lowering diet. | |
