Keep this leaflet, you may need to read it again.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you need advice or more information.
If symptoms worsen or do not improve, consult a doctor.
If any of the side effects worsen or if any side effects not mentioned in the leaflet occur, inform your doctor or pharmacist.

1. WHAT IS RIMANTIN AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR

Rimantin tablets contain 50 mg of rymantadine hydrochloride as the active substance.
It belongs to the group of antiviral medicines.
Rimantin is used in adults and children for the early treatment of influenza A, and in adults to prevent diseases caused by influenza A virus during an influenza epidemic.

2. IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE TAKING RIMANTIN

When not to take Rimantin

  • If the patient is hypersensitive to rymantadine hydrochloride or to other medicines belonging to the group of adamantanes (e.g., amantadine) or to any other component of the medicine.
  • If the patient has acute liver disease, acute or chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism.
  • In pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • In children under 1 year of age.

When to exercise special caution when taking Rimantin

  • If the patient has gastrointestinal disorders, liver disease, kidney failure, severe heart disease, and rhythm disorders. Caution should be exercised when taking the medicine and it should not be used without a doctor's recommendation.
  • If the patient is elderly.
  • If the patient has a history of epilepsy and is taking antiepileptic drugs. The risk of seizures during Rimantin treatment is increased. The doctor may then recommend reducing the dose to 2 tablets (100 mg) per day. If a seizure occurs, the use of the medicine should be discontinued.

Consult a doctor, even if the above warnings refer to past situations.

Taking Rimantin with other medicines

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you have taken recently, including those that are available without a prescription.
Paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid reduce the effectiveness of Rimantin.
Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Rimantin, as unforeseen central nervous system symptoms may occur.

Taking Rimantin with food and drink

Rimantin should be taken after a meal, with a large amount of water.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Before taking any medicine, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
The medicine should not be used during pregnancy.
The medicine should not be used during breastfeeding.

Driving and using machines

Rimantin may cause, among other things, insomnia, drowsiness, concentration disorders, and dizziness. Caution should be exercised if any side effects related to the central nervous system occur during treatment (see "Possible side effects").

Important information about some components of Rimantin

Rimantin contains lactose.
If the patient has been diagnosed with intolerance to some sugars, they should consult a doctor before taking the medicine.

3. HOW TO TAKE RIMANTIN

Rimantin should always be taken according to the doctor's recommendations. In case of doubts, consult a doctor or pharmacist again.
Treatment of influenza
Treatment should be started as soon as possible, preferably within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of the first symptoms of influenza, and continued for 5 days or for 24 to 48 hours after the symptoms of influenza have subsided.
Adults
Two tablets (100 mg) twice a day.
Children
Over 14 years - the same dosage as for adults should be used;
11-14 years - 1 tablet (50 mg) three times a day;
7-10 years - 1 tablet (50 mg) twice a day.
For children from 1 to 6 years of age, the dose of Rimantin is determined by the doctor, individually for each patient.
Prevention of influenza in adults
1 tablet (50 mg) once a day, for no longer than 30 days.
Rimantin should be taken orally, after meals, with a large amount of water.
If you feel that the effect of Rimantin is too strong or too weak, consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Taking a higher dose of Rimantin than recommended

No cases of overdose have been reported so far. However, overdose of a similar medicine - amantadine - has been described. The following side effects occurred: excitement, hallucinations, heart rhythm disorders, and death.
In case of taking a higher dose of the medicine than recommended, consult a doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Missing a dose of Rimantin

If a dose of the medicine is not taken at the scheduled time, it should be taken as soon as possible. However, if the time for taking the next dose is near, the missed dose should be skipped.
A double dose should not be taken to make up for a missed tablet.

4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Like all medicines, Rimantin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The side effects listed below have been reported in accordance with their frequency.

  • Insomnia, nervousness;
  • Dizziness, headaches, fatigue;
  • Nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, dry mouth;
  • Weakness.

Occurring uncommonly(more often than 1 in 1,000, but less often than 1 in 100 patients):

  • Excitement, depression, euphoria,
  • Motor hyperactivity, concentration disorders, coordination disorders, drowsiness;
  • Tinnitus;
  • Dyspnea;
  • Diarrhea, indigestion;
  • Rash.

Occurring rarely(more often than 1 in 10,000, but less often than 1 in 1,000 patients)

  • Hallucinations, including olfactory hallucinations, disorientation;
  • Gait disturbances, tremors, seizures, changes in taste or loss of taste;
  • Palpitations, heart failure, heart block, arrhythmias;
  • Hypertension, cerebrovascular disorders;
  • Bronchospasm, cough;
  • Galactorrhea;
  • Fainting.

When taking higher doses than recommended, the following have also been described: increased lacrimation, increased urination frequency, fever, constipation, excessive sweating, difficulty swallowing, and eye pain.
The frequency of side effects, especially those related to the gastrointestinal and nervous systems, increases significantly when higher doses than recommended are used.
If any of the side effects worsen or if any side effects not mentioned in the leaflet occur, inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Reporting side effects
If any side effects occur, including any side effects not mentioned in the leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist, or nurse. Side effects can be reported directly to the Department of Monitoring of Adverse Reactions to Medicinal Products of the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices, and Biocidal Products:

Reporting side effects will help to gather more information on the safety of the medicine.

5. HOW TO STORE RIMANTIN

The medicine should be stored in a place inaccessible and invisible to children.
Do not use Rimantin after the expiry date stated on the packaging after "Expiry date (EXP)".
Do not store above 25°C; protect from moisture.
Store in the original packaging.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste containers. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer needed. This will help protect the environment.

6. OTHER INFORMATION

What Rimantin contains

The active substance of the medicine is rymantadine hydrochloride. 1 tablet contains 50 mg of rymantadine hydrochloride.
Other components of the medicine are: lactose monohydrate, potato starch, stearic acid.
