How to use Mupina

1. What is Mupina and what is it used for

Mupina, 20 mg/g, nasal ointment (referred to as “Mupina” in this leaflet) contains the active substance calcium mupirocin. Mupina is a nasal ointment containing an antibiotic.

This medicine is used:

  • to combat bacteria in the nose, belonging to a group called staphylococci.
  • this group includes MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
  • this ointment is for use in the nose only.

2. Important information before using Mupina

When not to use Mupina:

if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to calcium mupirocin, mupirocin, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Do not use Mupina in infants to avoid getting it into the upper airways and choking.

If in doubt, do not use this medicine. Before using Mupina, discuss it with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Mupina may cause severe skin reactions and allergies. See “Conditions to watch for” in section 4.

Infections with insensitive organisms may develop if Mupina is used for a longer period. If this happens, tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.

Avoid contact between the ointment and your eyes.

  • -If the ointment accidentally gets into your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water.

Mupina and other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, or have recently taken, and about any medicines you plan to take.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Driving and using machines

It is unlikely that Mupina will affect your ability to drive or use machines.

3. How to use Mupina

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

Adults (including the elderly) and children over one year of age:

Use Mupina two to three times a day.

Children under one year of age:

Do not use Mupina in children under one year of age.

Patient with renal impairment:

No dose adjustment is necessary.

Patient with hepatic impairment:

No dose adjustment is necessary.

Using this medicine

Use Mupina two to three times a day.

  • 1. Wash and dry your hands.
  • 2. Place a small amount of Mupina, about the size of a match head, on your little finger.
  • 3. Insert it into one nostril.
  • 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other nostril.
  • 5. Squeeze the nostrils to spread the ointment.
  • 6. Replace the cap on the tube and wash your hands.

Instead of using your little finger to apply the ointment, you can use a cotton swab, especially for small children or seriously ill people.

How long to use Mupina

Use Mupina for as long as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. The bacteria are usually eliminated from the nose within 5-7 days of starting treatment.

Swallowing Mupina

If you swallow any amount of ointment, consult your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Missing a dose of Mupina

  • If you forget to use Mupina, use it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
  • Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Stopping Mupina

If you stop using Mupina too soon, not all the bacteria may be killed, or they may continue to multiply. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist when to stop using the ointment.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Conditions to watch for

Severe skin reactions or allergies:

These are very rare in people using Mupina. The symptoms are:

  • raised and itchy rash
  • swelling, sometimes of the face or lips, causing difficulty breathing
  • fainting or loss of consciousness.

If you get any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. Stop using Mupina.

  • -If you get a severe skin reaction or allergy, you should:
  • wash off the ointment
  • stop using it and
  • tell your doctor as soon as possible.

In rare cases, medicines like Mupina can cause inflammation of the colon (pseudomembranous colitis), leading to diarrhea, usually with blood and mucus, abdominal pain, fever.

If you get any of these symptoms, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

The following side effects may occur:

Uncommon(may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Itching, redness, burning, tingling, or prickling in the nose.

Rare(may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):

  • In some people, a skin reaction or allergy may occur in a severe form. Symptoms may include rash, itching, redness, or pain.

By reporting side effects, you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

5. How to store Mupina

  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the tube or carton after “EXP”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
  • Do not store above 25°C.
  • Shelf-life after first opening the tube: 7 days.
  • Mupina is a smooth, off-white ointment. Do not use it if it looks different from usual.
  • Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Mupina contains

  • The active substance is mupirocin in the form of calcium mupirocin. 100 g of nasal ointment contains 2.00 g of mupirocin in the form of calcium mupirocin. 1 g of nasal ointment contains 20 mg of mupirocin in the form of calcium mupirocin.
  • The other ingredients are white petrolatum and polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene copolymer.

  • Mupina is a smooth, off-white nasal ointment.
  • Mupina is available in tubes containing 3 g or 5 g of ointment. Each tube is packed in a cardboard box.
