1. What is Chlorchinaldin and what is it used for

Chlorchinaldin is an ointment that contains the active substance chlorquinaldol, a quinoline derivative.
Chlorquinaldol has a bactericidal effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including bacteria of the Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coligenus, as well as Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Streptococcus pyogenesand Staphylococcus aureus.Additionally, chlorquinaldol inhibits the growth of Candida albicansfungi and has a protozoicidal effect.

Indications

Chlorchinaldin ointment is indicated for local treatment of purulent skin conditions of bacterial origin and nasal mucosa inflammation in infections with microorganisms sensitive to chlorquinaldol.

2. Important information before using Chlorchinaldin

When not to use Chlorchinaldin:

  • during the first trimester of pregnancy;
  • in children under 12 years of age;
  • in varicose ulcers of the legs;
  • as a preventive measure;
  • for a long time.

Warnings and precautions

Chlorchinaldin should not be used simultaneously with medicines that may cause interactions described below in "Chlorchinaldin and other medicines".
If symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, the use of the medicine should be discontinued.
Eyes and mucous membranes, except for the nasal mucosa, should be protected from contact with the medicine.
If the symptoms of the disease do not disappear after a few days of using the medicine, you should contact a doctor, who will recommend other treatment.
When used according to the recommendations, the occurrence of general side effects of chlorquinaldol, such as gastrointestinal disorders, optic nerve damage, and polyneuritis, is unlikely.
In case of neurological symptoms or vision disturbances, the use of the medicine should be discontinued and a doctor consulted.

Chlorchinaldin and other medicines

The doctor should be informed about all medicines currently or recently used by the patient, as well as medicines planned to be used.
When used with quaternary ammonium compounds, it may cause allergic reactions. The medicine should not be used simultaneously with other locally used medicines containing iodine or metals with a similar mechanism of action, as they reduce the effectiveness of treatment.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, suspects she may be pregnant, or plans to have a child, she should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
The medicine should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Due to the lack of data on the use of the medicine in the later stages of pregnancy, the medicine can be used in the later stages of pregnancy only if, in the doctor's opinion, the benefits of using the medicine outweigh the potential risk to the fetus.
The medicine should not be used during breastfeeding, as its safety has not been established.

Driving and using machines

Chlorchinaldin has no influence or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Chlorchinaldin contains lanolin and cetyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions (e.g., contact dermatitis).
Chlorchinaldin contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218), which may cause allergic reactions (possible late-type reactions).

3. How to use Chlorchinaldin

This medicine should always be used according to the doctor's recommendations. In case of doubts, the doctor should be consulted.
The medicine is intended for local use .
Affected areas are usually covered with a thin layer of ointment 2 or 3 times a day, and if necessary, if the doctor recommends it, an occlusive dressing is applied.
After using the medicine, hands should be washed.

Use in children

The medicine should not be used in children under 12 years of age.

Using a higher dose of Chlorchinaldin than recommended

In case of using a higher dose of the medicine than recommended, a doctor should be consulted.
No symptoms of overdose are known when the medicine is used according to the indications and recommended use.
In case of ingestion of the medicine, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
In case of swallowing the medicine or using it in excessive amounts, on damaged skin, or for a long time, general side effects of chlorquinaldol may occur, such as gastrointestinal disorders, optic nerve damage, and polyneuritis.

Missing a dose of Chlorchinaldin

A double dose should not be used to make up for a missed dose.
In case of missing a dose, the medicine should be used as soon as possible. Then, treatment should be continued using the medicine according to the previously recommended dosage.

Stopping the use of Chlorchinaldin

In case of any further doubts related to the use of this medicine, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Chlorchinaldin can cause side effects, although they may not occur in everyone.
Transient skin irritation, dryness, redness, itching, or burning, contact dermatitis, allergic reactions may occur.

If any side effects occur, including any side effects not listed in this leaflet, the doctor or pharmacist, or nurse should be informed. 5. How to store Chlorchinaldin

Store at a temperature below 25°C.
Store the tube tightly closed.
The medicine should be stored out of sight and reach of children.
Attention should be paid to the expiration date of the medicine.
The medicine should not be used after the expiration date stated on the tube and carton.
The expiration date means the last day of the given month.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste containers. A pharmacist should be asked how to dispose of unused medicines. This will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the packaging and other information

What Chlorchinaldin contains

  • The active substance of the medicine is chlorquinaldol.

1 g of ointment contains 30 mg of chlorquinaldol.

  • The other ingredients are: white petrolatum, lanolin, cetyl alcohol, white wax, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218).

What Chlorchinaldin looks like and what the packaging contains

Chlorchinaldin is a homogeneous ointment, greenish-cream in color with a gray tint.
The packaging of the medicine is a tube containing 20 g of ointment. The tube, along with the patient leaflet, is placed in a carton box.
