1. What is Carbo medicinalis MF and what is it used for

Carbo medicinalis MF is a round, black tablet containing 250 mg of activated carbon (also known as medicinal carbon). The medicine is used for diarrhea and bloating, and also, in consultation with a doctor, for poisoning with medicines or other chemical substances.
Medicinal carbon is not very effective in poisoning with boric acid, iron sulfate, and other metal compounds, DDT, cyanides, lithium, ethanol, methanol, ethylene glycol, insoluble water compounds, as well as inorganic acids and bases.
If there is no improvement or the patient feels worse, they should contact their doctor (see section 2: Warnings and precautions).

2. Important information before using Carbo medicinalis MF

When not to use Carbo medicinalis MF

  • if the patient is allergic to medicinal carbon or any other ingredient of this medicine (listed in section 6);
  • in unconscious patients.

Warnings and precautions

The medicine should be used with caution in cases of poisoning with substances that affect intestinal peristalsis (e.g., opioids, such as morphine and its derivatives). Laxatives should be used with caution and only occasionally during treatment with activated carbon, as severe and prolonged diarrhea can cause water and electrolyte disorders.
In case of vomiting or if it is necessary to induce vomiting with an oral medicine, vomiting should be induced before administering the activated carbon. Carbo medicinalis MF should be given 30-60 minutes after vomiting has stopped.
If more than 27 tablets are taken per day, the amount of sucrose (sugar) contained in the tablets exceeds 5 g/24 h, which should be taken into account in patients with diabetes.
If the patient has previously been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars, they should contact their doctor before taking the medicine.
Patient who have been taking the preparation for 7 days due to bloating or 2 days due to diarrhea, and whose symptoms persist despite treatment, should contact their doctor.
If blood in the stool or fever occurs during treatment for diarrhea, the patient should contact their doctor.

Children

Children should be given the medicine in the form of a water paste prepared from crushed tablets.

Carbo medicinalis MF and other medicines

The patient should inform their doctor or pharmacist about all medicines they are currently taking or have recently taken, as well as any medicines they plan to take.
Medicinal carbon may weaken the absorption of other medicines from the gastrointestinal tract.
It binds to its surface therapeutic substances used, among others, in epilepsy, mental disorders, infections, hypertension, and heart diseases, as well as many other medicines and substances, including: barbiturates, benzodiazepines, phenytoin, chloramphenicol, chlorpromazine, phenothiazine, mianserin, MAO inhibitors, chloroquine, quinine, nicotine, chlormethiazole, clonidine, digoxin, propranolol, and other beta-adrenergic receptor blockers, acetylsalicylic acid, and other salicylates, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, paracetamol, theophylline, zidovudine.
Medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before or after taking the activated carbon.

Carbo medicinalis MF with food and drink

Activated carbon should not be taken with food that weakens the effect of the medicine.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility

If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, thinks they may be pregnant, or plans to have a child, they should consult their doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.

Driving and using machines

Carbo medicinalis MF does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or operate machines.

Carbo medicinalis MF contains sucrose and lactose

The medicine contains sucrose and lactose. If the patient has previously been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars, they should contact their doctor before taking the medicine.
If more than 27 tablets are taken per day, the amount of sucrose (sugar) contained in the tablets exceeds 5 g/24 h, which should be taken into account in patients with diabetes.

3. How to use Carbo medicinalis MF

This medicine should always be used exactly as described in the patient leaflet or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, the patient should contact their doctor or pharmacist.
Carbo medicinalis MF should be taken orally.
Adults and children over 12 years old

  • Bloating: 4 to 5 tablets several times a day until symptoms subside.
  • Diarrhea: 12 to 16 tablets at once. Tablets should be crushed or chewed before swallowing. It is best to administer in the form of a water paste prepared from crushed tablets. If necessary, the dose can be repeated every few hours.
  • Poisoning with medicines or other toxic substances: 49 to 50 tablets should be taken at once. In cases of severe poisoning, up to 100 g of activated carbon can be taken at once. If necessary, the dose can be repeated several times a day.

Children over 1 year old
Poisoning with medicines or other toxic substances: 49 to 50 tablets should be taken at once. If necessary, the dose can be repeated several times a day.
Children under 1 year old
Poisoning with medicines or other toxic substances: usually 1 g/kg body weight in the form of a water suspension. If necessary, the dose can be repeated every 4 to 6 hours.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Large amounts of activated carbon, especially after repeated administration, can cause gastrointestinal disorders, constipation. In children, vomiting may occur. There is also a risk of activated carbon entering the lungs.
The medicine turns the stool black.

Reporting side effects

If any side effects occur, including any side effects not listed in the leaflet, the patient should inform their doctor or pharmacist, or nurse.

5. How to store Carbo medicinalis MF

Store at a temperature below 25°C.
The medicine should be stored out of sight and reach of children.
Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the packaging after: EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of the given month.
