Carbo activatus
This medicine should always be used exactly as described in the patient leaflet or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.
Carbo medicinalis MF is a round, black tablet containing 250 mg of activated carbon (also known as medicinal carbon). The medicine is used for diarrhea and bloating, and also, in consultation with a doctor, for poisoning with medicines or other chemical substances.
Medicinal carbon is not very effective in poisoning with boric acid, iron sulfate, and other metal compounds, DDT, cyanides, lithium, ethanol, methanol, ethylene glycol, insoluble water compounds, as well as inorganic acids and bases.
If there is no improvement or the patient feels worse, they should contact their doctor (see section 2: Warnings and precautions).
The medicine should be used with caution in cases of poisoning with substances that affect intestinal peristalsis (e.g., opioids, such as morphine and its derivatives). Laxatives should be used with caution and only occasionally during treatment with activated carbon, as severe and prolonged diarrhea can cause water and electrolyte disorders.
In case of vomiting or if it is necessary to induce vomiting with an oral medicine, vomiting should be induced before administering the activated carbon. Carbo medicinalis MF should be given 30-60 minutes after vomiting has stopped.
If more than 27 tablets are taken per day, the amount of sucrose (sugar) contained in the tablets exceeds 5 g/24 h, which should be taken into account in patients with diabetes.
If the patient has previously been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars, they should contact their doctor before taking the medicine.
Patient who have been taking the preparation for 7 days due to bloating or 2 days due to diarrhea, and whose symptoms persist despite treatment, should contact their doctor.
If blood in the stool or fever occurs during treatment for diarrhea, the patient should contact their doctor.
Children should be given the medicine in the form of a water paste prepared from crushed tablets.
The patient should inform their doctor or pharmacist about all medicines they are currently taking or have recently taken, as well as any medicines they plan to take.
Medicinal carbon may weaken the absorption of other medicines from the gastrointestinal tract.
It binds to its surface therapeutic substances used, among others, in epilepsy, mental disorders, infections, hypertension, and heart diseases, as well as many other medicines and substances, including: barbiturates, benzodiazepines, phenytoin, chloramphenicol, chlorpromazine, phenothiazine, mianserin, MAO inhibitors, chloroquine, quinine, nicotine, chlormethiazole, clonidine, digoxin, propranolol, and other beta-adrenergic receptor blockers, acetylsalicylic acid, and other salicylates, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, paracetamol, theophylline, zidovudine.
Medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before or after taking the activated carbon.
Activated carbon should not be taken with food that weakens the effect of the medicine.
If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, thinks they may be pregnant, or plans to have a child, they should consult their doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
Carbo medicinalis MF does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or operate machines.
The medicine contains sucrose and lactose. If the patient has previously been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars, they should contact their doctor before taking the medicine.
If more than 27 tablets are taken per day, the amount of sucrose (sugar) contained in the tablets exceeds 5 g/24 h, which should be taken into account in patients with diabetes.
