ACERIN, (195 mg + 98 mg)/g, liquid for the skin

Read the leaflet carefully before using the medicine, as it contains important information for the patient.

This medicine should always be used exactly as described in this patient leaflet or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

  • Keep this leaflet, you may need to read it again.
  • If you need advice or additional information, consult a pharmacist.
  • If the patient experiences any side effects, including any side effects not listed in this leaflet, they should inform their doctor or pharmacist. See section 4.
  • If there is no improvement or the patient feels worse, they should contact their doctor.

1. What is Acerin and what is it used for

Acerin is a liquid for application to the skin, containing the active substances salicylic acid and lactic acid.
Salicylic acid has a keratolytic effect, softening and loosening the thickened skin, making it easier to remove.
Lactic acid is a cauterizing agent that destroys the thickened skin layer.

Indications

Removal of calluses and thickened skin.

2. Important information before using Acerin

When not to use Acerin

  • if the patient is allergic to the active substances (salicylic acid or lactic acid) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
  • if the patient has diabetes or circulatory disorders,
  • if the skin around the callus is damaged or diseased,
  • in children,
  • orally,
  • on the face and in the genital area.

Warnings and precautions

Before starting to use Acerin, the patient should discuss it with their doctor or pharmacist.

  • If excessive skin irritation occurs, treatment should be discontinued.
  • Eyes, respiratory tract, and mucous membranes should be protected from the medicine and its vapors. In case of accidental contact of the medicine with the eyes or mucous membranes, they should be rinsed immediately with a large amount of water and medical attention should be sought.
  • The skin around the callus should be protected from contact with the medicine, as it may cause burns. The medicine should only be applied to the callus or thickened skin.
  • The medicine should not be used on healthy, undamaged skin, as salicylic acid can be absorbed through the skin and cause systemic side effects. If the medicine comes into contact with the surrounding healthy skin, it should be rinsed off immediately with water.
  • The medicine contains volatile and flammable substances, so the packaging carries a warning: "Caution with fire".

Children

Acerin is not intended for use in children.

Acerin and other medicines

The patient should inform their doctor or pharmacist about all medicines they are currently taking or have recently taken, as well as any medicines they plan to take.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, thinks they may be pregnant, or plans to have a child, they should consult their doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
No studies have been conducted on the use of Acerin during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Driving and using machines

No studies have been conducted on the effect of Acerin on the ability to drive and use machines.

3. How to use Acerin

This medicine should always be used exactly as described in this patient leaflet or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, the patient should consult their doctor or pharmacist.
Acerin is for use on the skin only.
Acerin should be applied with a brush to the callus or thickened skin area. Care should be taken not to touch healthy skin. The medicine should be allowed to dry completely. If necessary, the application of the medicine can be repeated for several days.
Then the feet should be soaked and the callus removed.
The medicine should be used carefully to avoid dripping from the brush and spilling the medicine.
If the patient feels that the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, they should consult their doctor or pharmacist.

Use in children

Acerin is not intended for use in children.

Using more than the recommended dose of Acerin

There are no data on overdose of the medicine when used according to the indications and recommended use.
In case of accidental ingestion of the medicine, the patient should contact their doctor immediately.

Missing a dose of Acerin

A double dose should not be used to make up for a missed dose.
If the patient has any further doubts about the use of this medicine, they should consult their doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Acerin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Irritation and inflammation may occur.
Using the medicine on healthy skin can cause burns and pain. If worrying symptoms occur, the patient should stop using the medicine and contact their doctor immediately.

If the patient experiences any side effects, including any side effects not listed in this leaflet, they should inform their doctor or pharmacist. Side effects can be reported directly to the Department of Monitoring of Adverse Reactions to Medicinal Products, Medical Devices, and Biocidal Products:

5. How to store Acerin

The medicine should be stored out of sight and reach of children.
The medicine should not be used after the expiry date stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
Store in a temperature below 25°C, in a dry place.
Store the packaging tightly closed. Store in the original packaging.
The medicine is flammable. Handle with fire cautiously.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. The patient should ask their pharmacist how to dispose of medicines that are no longer needed. This will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the packaging and other information

What Acerin contains

  • The active substances of Acerin are salicylic acid and lactic acid. 1 g of liquid for the skin contains 195 mg of salicylic acid and 98 mg of lactic acid.
  • The other ingredients are: cellulose acetophthalate, shellac, acetone, butyl acetate.

Acerin is a liquid for application to the skin.
